Since the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999, Chengyong Chen had exercised his legal right to appeal against the persecution at the Appeals Office in Beijing several times. He was frequently arrested, sent to detention centres and forced to attend brainwashing classes. To protect his family from persecution, he eventually chose to leave home. Even then, he continued to appeal . Chengyongs body was eventually found in an abandoned hut in July 2001. Only when Jiangs regime was put under pressure by the Australian government did Ms. Dai receive her husbands ashes.
