Faith and Freedom is an academic journal that has been published biannually by Oxford University’s Harris Manchester College since 1947. The Journal’s first issue in 2003 carried a 15-page article on Falun Gong, which was written by a practitioner at the invitation of the Journal’s Editor.

The article introduced the 11-year history of Falun Gong, and talked about how practitioners try to improve their moral character and practise five meditative exercises. The article then analysed the cause and scope of the persecution by the Jiang regime before highlighting Jiang’s main tactics of torture, propaganda and brainwashing. The author then provided an overview of the campaign for the freedom of Falun Gong practitioners in China, including the support it has received and its progress.

The article concluded with an outlook for the future and the remark that “History has witnessed many persecutions of righteous beliefs yet none of these suppressions succeeded. The current persecution in China is doomed to meet the same fate. If there is any difference, it may be that the efforts of the practitioners and the world community will make the suppression much shorter-lived.”
