This is a true story that happened right next to where we live.
The event occurred in a rural area in western Liaoning province. One family there is influenced by the notion that boys are more valuable than girls. The wife of the family gave birth to their first child, a girl, and the second child was again a girl. Her husband was so mad that he threw the second girl off a mountain. The third one was, again, a girl. The husband was furious and he again threw the girl off the mountain. Upon returning home, he found that the girl was lying in front of the house. He ought to have felt regret and carried the girl back into their home, but he again threw the girl back off the mountain.
While he was heading home down the hill, the weather changed and dark clouds were stirring, accompanied by claps of thunder. He was scared and rushed home. He closed the door upon entering his house and heavy rain began to pour down.
He had a big, very gentle dog at home. He heard the dog barking a couple of minutes later. After he opened the door, he found that the dog had carried the baby home in his mouth. The man instantly flew into a rage and, using a shovel, hacked the dog and the baby girl to death, and then kicked the baby's body into a ditch. At that moment, a fireball fell from the sky and struck him down, killing him on the spot. Right after that, the dark clouds dissipated and the sky was again clear. It seems that his cruel heart and evil deeds had incurred the wrath of heaven, and resulted in his demise.
Greedy Men Abandon a Baby and Are Struck Dead by Lightning
This story happened in Miezhuang village, Jiaoxi town, Jiaozhou city, Shandong province. It was the morning of June 4, 1964. Six villagers went to the crop bureau to hand in grain to the government. On their way, they found an abandoned baby, crying. They went over to have a look, and found that it seemed someone had left the baby there, along with some money. They took the money and put it into their own pockets, then abandoned the baby along the road when they left.
They used the money they found to wine and dine themselves at a local restaurant. On their way back home, they saw that the baby had died from exposure. At that point, the clear sky suddenly became very cloudy, thunder rolled ominously, and rain started to come down. The group of men who had committed the evil deed became frightened. All of a sudden, a lightning bolt struck and killed five of them. The one person who survived was thrown quite a distance. He was the one who'd not shared in wining and dining at the restaurant with the ill-gotten gains.
These days, we tend to regard everything that happens as chance, not thinking that so called "natural disasters" and "freak events" have a deeper moral cause and effect behind them. But can we really put these remarkable stories down to chance? Can we afford to ignore the lessons they may be teaching us? Perhaps the ancient Chinese saying, "good is met with good and evil brings due retribution." is one we should take more seriously.
