Lawsuit against Jiang Zemin
In October of 2002, a lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Illinois against Jiang Zemin, the former President of China for, among others, genocide, crimes against humanity, and torture. The lawsuit also named Office 6/10 as a defendant in the case because of their role in the persecution of Falun Gong in China and in the United States. Arrest and Detention of Dr. Charles Li
On January 22, Dr. Li was detained and subsequently charged with 'intending' to tap into Chinese state-run television and broadcast programs exposing the persecution of Falun Gong. Chinese authorities call this act of tapping broadcast signals 'sabotage.'
On March 21, in a 'show trial' lasting less than a day, Dr. Li was tried and convicted of 'intending' to 'sabotage.' On May 15, Dr. Li's fiancée, Ms. Yeong-ching Foo was notified that Dr. Li's appeal had been rejected six days earlier and that he had been sent to Nanjing Prison in Jiangsu Province where he remains today.
