Ms. Yang Yufang (the name policemen reported to higher authorities was "An Yuhuan" but her real name is Yang Yufang) was 50 years old, and from Zhangjiakou City.
On June 16, 2003, Yang Yufang's son received a telephone call, asking that her family members come to the Qiaodong Vice Squad.
After Yang Yufang's husband arrived there, the policemen threatened, terrorized, and deceived her family members and said that they found over 20 computers along with a lot of truth-clarifying materials in her home, and that because Yang went on a hunger strike in the detention centre, she had died from diabetes. Her family members could not believe this shocking news. She had been a very healthy woman, and they could not understand how she could have died in just a few days.
At 6:00 p.m. on the same day, Yang Yufang's husband, sister, and brother requested to see her body. They went to the funeral home, but the policemen would not allow them to see her body.
The next day, her family members went to the funeral home once again to view the body. There were blood marks on her right nostril, left side of her mouth, and her left ear. There were blue and purple swollen marks on her right cheek. Her body was covered with bruises. She was very emaciated. Her family members had never before seen the clothes she was wearing.
The marks on the body indicated that that policemen beat Yang Yufang to death. The policemen repeatedly concealed the facts and attempted to avoid responsibility. The Qiaodong Vice Squad, Shisanli Detention Centre, and the Fifth City Hospital all bear irrefutable responsibility for Yang Yufang's death.
