While being detained at the Dalian City Forced Labour Camp, Mr. Zhang was beaten so badly that he couldn't get to sleep at night. He also coughed all day long and vomited blood very often. Once he vomited about 200 ml blood. Seeing that Mr. Zhang was on the verge of death, the labour camp released him on medical parole in order to escape responsibility. After returning home, Mr. Zhang never recovered. He passed away on January 10, 2003.
Mr. Zhang's son Zhang Chunduo and his third daughter Zhang Chunfang were both illegally detained three times. At present, Zhang Chunduo is still being detained in Wafangdian City Detention Centre. Zhang Chunfang was illegally sentenced to 3 years of forced labour and is now held at Masanjia Labour Camp in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province.
