Fifty-year old Ms. Li Meizi, is a permanent resident of the U.S. In September 2002, she went back to Beijing from Florida to take care of her elderly parents. One day in November of the same year, while having dinner at her friend's home, the police broke in and searched the whole place. The police found two copies of flyers in her handbag. As a result, she was arrested and sent to a detention centre.

Even though the labour "education" law in China does not apply to permanent residents of foreign countries, the Fengtai District Police Department still refused to release her after having detained her for eight months. Moreover, they sentenced her to two years of forced labour.

Ms. Li Meizi is now reportedly being detained at the Fengtai District Detention Centre in Beijing.
