5. The façade at the labour camp and the false propaganda

This campaign of persecution against Falun Gong is more cunning and deceptive than the Tian’anmen Square incident in 1989, because the perpetrators are frightened that the international community will unanimously condemn it and break off diplomatic and trade relations so that they have no money to sustain the persecution. With the international exposition of the persecution and the pressure of the investigation from the international human rights organisations and media, the evil regime began to spend a lot of money on rebuilding the prisons and labour camps and forging good living conditions and human rights environment.

The labour camps were continuously rebuilt and new equipment added since the Jiang regime invested a lot of money in the systems of the prisons and policemen. On the surface one could see the following kinds of change:

· The electrified wire netting on the high wall had changed into an infrared detector and camera;
· There were sports designs whitewashed on the walls;
· The iron bars outside the windows of the accommodation had been painted in a white peacock design;
· There was a gold-fish bowl, potted plant and a TV set in every room;
· All the utilities in the kitchen had changed into stainless steel ones and the coal stoves changed into gas cookers;
· In the yard, trees and grass were planted, and rabbits and chickens were raised.

Those conditions are even better than in some famous Chinese Universities and schools, but the brutal tortures didn’t decrease at all.

Although a lot of local governments in China do not have enough money for salaries and a lot of poor and outlying districts do not have enough money for building schools for kids, the Jiang regime spend a great amount of money on persecuting Falun Gong. Not only did the labour camps get refurbished, but also the prison policemen would choose nice scenic spots for meetings and the directors of camps and some policemen often went overseas on holiday.

Here I also experienced another part of this persecution - the fabricated news propaganda. During the latter half of 2001, the reporters from CCTV interviewed me for the whole afternoon in the Tuanhe Labour Camp. One reporter was a presenter for an English program, another one was a woman reporter called Liyuqiang who later interviewed Liusiying in the self-immolation reports. They presented themselves as supporters of Falun Gong. I told them how I had benefited from Falun Gong and what I understood from the scientific angle. I had thought it was a good interview. But the footage of my interview was not on CCTV programs. Later I found some of my footage in the lying propaganda VCD sent out by the Chinese embassy in Belgium. They distorted and fabricated my words in order to attack Falun Gong. All of the effort they put into interviewing me was for the purpose of finding a couple of my words to twist to cover up the facts of my suffering in the Labour Camp.

6. Special agents in the Labour Camp

There was another complicated issue; the spies who posed as Falun Gong students and came into the labour camp. Those people also said they were sent here because of practising Falun Gong at the beginning. They seemed to be very steadfast and even could recite some quotes from Falun Gong books. But one day such a person would be “transformed” and would turn around and start hitting and persecuting Falun Gong students. In the Camps of Beijing, the evil policemen were good at using those people to beat up people. They were even more savage than the evil policemen under their support. One practitioner in my team had his spine fractured and was paralysed when they beat him up.

Those who posed as Falun Gong students were good at saying different things to different people. Though they pretended for a while they would expose themselves sooner or later. Falun Gong emphasises kindness and endurance, and real practitioners will change quite a lot in terms of their attitude and appearance. Those people did not have such self-control. What they said showed their thoughts against human nature based on class struggles. They thought they were relying on the ruling class, and controlling everything from the dark. But their difference from true practitioners was more obvious to us than to themselves.

After the persecution caught the public attention, some different governments, organisations and intelligence agencies have also been observing us. However, the **Party is not observing us, but trying to directly and purposefully to frame and destroy Falun Gong from the inside. The means the **Party has used against its own people are extremely filthy and shameless.

In fact, those policemen and spies hiding among Falun Gong practitioners fully understand the Falun Gong students. They are very clear that we are all good people and that we are just asking for the right to practice Falun Gong. Many of those people can’t think with the goodness of their human nature after the **Party ‘s indoctrination. It is a kind of job to them. It is not easy for them, as they are far away from their family and entering into the hardships of a labour cam. Most of them are in it for the money. It is a personal issue as to whether one believes in Falun Gong or not; no one can force anyone to practice. But what is truly sad is that they would rather believe in Jiang; believe in such vicious political hooligan and help do such evil deeds.

If Falun Gong students had planned for power, to use spies in this way would have been justified. But we are just practicing cultivation without any desire for political power. We are saving those people who were deceived by the lies. They can’t disturb what we want to do. No matter what means they used, Falun Gong students can’t be defeated. The essential point in the Falun Gong issue is never one of political power but is one of human nature. The ideology of **Party goes against human nature and the laws of heaven, so Jiang thought that Falun Gong impeded him. But what he did during the persecution of Falun Gong actually pushed the Chinese government to the abyss.

A lot of things the officers, policemen and spies from different level did were illegal, and they can’t be absolved of the responsibilities by the fact that they were following orders from their superiors. There are a lot of similar lessons in the history of the **Party, like the young Red Guards the in the Cultural Revolution. The regime did away with witnesses, such as Liuchunling and her daughter, the actors in the Tian’anmen Square self-immolation.

Those special agents who are involved in all kinds of crimes know many “national secrets”, thus each level is threatened by the level above. Sooner or later they will become the victims of the higher level. If any of the espionage overseas is made public by an the insider, it would result in the great attention and criticism from the international community. So those who carried out the orders or know the secrets will be regarded as a threat to the nation. If the situation changes a bit, those governmental officials, 610 Office officials, policemen and spies who are all relevant to the persecution of Falun Gong will turn on those below them and use the as scapegoats.

It is very obvious in the labour camp of Beijing. Those who are higher than vice director of Labour Camp and from the Labour Bureau are only required to achieve a “transformation target” without being directly involved in the brutal tortures. But actually, they all drop hints or give tacit permission. When the brutal tortures were made public and the international pressure came, those directors were sanctimonious and pretended to impose strict sanctions on those teams where the brutal tortures were happening. At that time, those evil policemen in the front line who had made great efforts to get promotion and benefits through persecuting Falun Gong, such as Jianghaiquan, Yueqingjin in the Tuanhe Labour Camp, became the scapegoats for their superiors.

Although Falun Gong students are suffering greatly from the agony of the persecution, our future is bright. Those who persecuted Falun Gong now seem swollen with arrogance, while they are destroying their future. No one is safe in a system where from the top to bottom all are doing evil deeds, and are willing to sacrifice anyone below themselves. Only by replacing what is evil and wicked with goodness and compassion can they find safety.
