The 10th of December is International Human Rights Day. Many human rights organisations around the world celebrate this day in different ways. In Gothenburg, Amnesty International and Falun Gong practitioners held a joint activity to help people learn more about human rights abuses.
A Swedish Falun Gong-practitioner gave a speech, talking about the persecution in China and her personal experience in Thailand, where she was unlawfully detained by police because Jiang's regime had put pressure on them.
A representative of Amnesty International also gave a speech, describing the different forms that persecution takes against all kinds of religious and spiritual groups in China. If you take into account all the Christians, Buddhists, Muslims and Falun Gong practitioners who are being persecuted in China, the number of persecuted Chinese people indeed becomes very large.
The activity finished with a parade, which moved along the main avenue in the centre of Gothenburg. Many small candles were used to form the shape of a big candle, which is the symbol of Amnesty international, to remind the world to help stop torture and human rights violations.
