Many Members of European Parliament wrote to the non-governmental organisation European Friends of Falun Gong about the shooting attack on Falun gong practitioner David Liang in South Africa. They wrote to the South African High Commissioner, Dr Linidiwe Mabuza, expressing their concern and requesting a full investigation of this shooting incident.
MEP Roger Helmer wrote to EFOFG and said, “I completely sympathise with you and understand your concerns regarding the treatment of David Liang. I have written to the South African High Commissioner, Linidiwe Mabuza, emphasising my concerns and I have called for a full investigation into the matter. I will be sure to keep you updated on future developments.”
MEP Theresa Villiers said, “Thank you for your letter of 1st July 2004 regarding the recent experience of Mr David Liang in South Africa. I am sorry to hear about the terrible ordeal he underwent there.”
Another MEP responded: “I have written to Dr Linidiwe Mabuza, at the South African Embassy, requesting his support in urging the South African government to launch a full scale investigation.”
MEP Dr Charles Tannock said: “Thank you for your letter of 1st July and I am very sorry to hear about the incident suffered by David Liang which you outline in your letter. I am writing to the High Commissioner of South Africa on your behalf and I will write to you again.”
MEP Helmer said in his letter to the High Commissioner of South Africa: “the alleged attack was an attempt by Chinese officials to counteract the serving of legal papers against two leading members of the Chinese government, Vice-President Zeng Qinghong and Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai. As you can imagine I am very concerned about this. I must stress that is no evidence to suggest any illegal action by the South African Government, however I am eager to know whether any investigation has been launched or will be launched regarding this issue. I would highly appreciate your swift response on this crucial matter.”
