Reprehensible People at Lanzhou University Intensify the Persecution Against Dafa Practitioners

Recently, the Gansu Provincial "610" Office [an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems] issued strict orders to Lanzhou University to achieve a 50% "conversion" rate [refers to the process of brainwashing and torturing practitioners into renouncing Dafa.] In addition, the so-called "transformed" people people who were brainwashed and tortured until they renounced Dafa must slander Dafa publicly on TV. Corrupt individuals at the Lanzhou University held a "Compulsory Brainwashing Class" which is not only illegal but unconstitutional. They forced 6 practitioners, including 3 teachers and 3 students to attend the brainwashing class. Now they place great hope on making the 3 students denounce Dafa in order to achieve the 50% "conversion" rate. Recently we have learned that 2 students were sent against their will to be brainwashed in an underground hostel of the Lanzhou University Youth League Committee. Another female student ran away from school to resist the brainwashing. Her current whereabouts are unknown.

This spring, Tan Xiaorong, a doctoral student in the Department of Life Sciences, and Wang Yunbo, an undergraduate student in the Department of Economic Management at Lanzhou University painted signs that promoted Dafa along Dingxi road and were arrested. Currently, they are still being illegally held in the Xiguoyuan Detention Center. According to the latest information released, they are waiting to be sentenced.

At 2 a.m. on October 31, 2001, while fast asleep, a young teacher from the Department of Life Sciences at Lanzhou University, Bao Xinkang (holding a master degree) was unexpectedly confronted at his home by officials from Lanzhou University Security Division and the local police. They yelled while violently beating on the door, claiming that they would ransack his home. They made a great deal of commotion that was heard throughout the neighborhood. Bao Xinkang firmly refused the police's illegal presence and request to open the door. He tried to get out through the window of the fifth floor using a rope. Unfortunately, he fell while half way down resulting in a serious spinal injury.
