My name is Chen Jianguo, and I am 29 years old. I come from Luoding, Guangdong Province. I began practising Falun Gong in December 1995 when I was at South China University of Technology. On February 10th, 2000, I went to Beijing to appeal on behalf of Falun Gong. I was arrested in front of the Appeals Office by police and sent to Sanshui Forced Labour Camp on March 28th, the same day that Lai Zhijun was sent there from Dongwan City. I witnessed how Lai Zhijun was tortured to death.
Mr. Lai Zhijun, in his forties, was the director of the Peoples' Congress in Fenggang Town, Dongwan City. He was sentenced to one year of forced labour. He had already been detained for six months before he was sent to the Sanshui Forced Labour Camp. According to a source, the Dongwan City mayor tried to convince Lai to give up Falun Gong, but Lai rejected this unreasonable demand. As a result, he was sent to Sanshui Forced Labour Camp.
On March 29, 2000, he was savagely beaten and shocked with electric batons and forced to run long distances because he persisted in practising Falun Gong. Then he went on a hunger strike. He asked me why I was afraid of practising the Falun Gong exercises, and told me to not be afraid and that being afraid was a manifestation of karma.
On the morning of March 30, 2000, I got up and started to practise the Falun Gong exercises. A guard came and shocked me with an electric baton for several minutes and forced me to run on the track field. While I was running, I saw that Lai Zhijun was being constantly shocked with electric batons by the guards.
In the afternoon on March 30, 2000, I saw that the guards continued shocking Lai Zhijun with electric batons on the soccer field.
On the morning of March 31, 2000, Lai Zhiju continued to do the Falun Gong exercises and the guards continued shocking him with electric batons. The batons made a large cork-popping sound. I shouted to criminal guards to stop, and the guard shouted back "Stop practising Falun Gong! If anyone practises Falun Gong, he will be treated just like Lai Zhijun." I saw that a doctor with glasses tortured Lai Zhijun that day.
In the afternoon on March 30, the doctor from the labour camp asked Lai Zhijun, who had been on a hunger strike the day before, to drink a glass of sugar water. Lai refused and demanded that they allow him to practise. In the end, the doctor force-fed him by inserting a tube from his mouth to the stomach.
In early April 2000, Lai Zhijun died from being beaten, tortured with electric batons, force-feedings, and starvation. However, the labour camp authorities, in order to cover up their crimes, claimed that Lai died from a heart attack. I will never forget the violent acts of the criminal guard Chen Ruixiong, the camp doctor with glasses, and division head Fan.
