In 2001 whilst being illegally detained in the Fengtai Detention Centre for practising Falun Gong, I read a book which came from Judicial Police internal classified materials. It systematically explained and summarised the various persecution methods and strategies used against Falun Gong practitioners. The book was filled with slander defaming Falun Gong and its founder.
I braced myself in order to read it again and again, wanting to find out the methodology of Jiang Zemin and his gang of scoundrels in their systematic persecution of Falun Gong.
The book first excerpted some laws, regulations, and a few vicious administrative orders specifically targeting Falun Gong. This typically includes: Article Six from the Ministry of Public Security, Public Announcement from the Civil Administration Bureau, various documented announcements from the Department of Labour Resources and so on. This was followed by the Judicial and Public Security Department's analysis of the case against the Falun Dafa Research Centre staff members Li Chang, Wang Zhiwen, Ji Liewu, Yaojie, Li Xiaobing and Li Xiaomei. The reports included the indictment, written judgement, defence statement and so on. This was followed by the summary report from the Judicial and Public Security Department as well as the Municipal Party Committee. This was followed by a report coming from the Beijing City Prison Administrative Bureau and the Beijing City Bureau of Forced Labour Reform, claiming credit for their efforts. Finally this was followed by documented reports from those that were forced to sign repentance statements [In this statement the practitioner is forced to admit remorse for practising Falun Gong, promise to give up Falun Gong, and never again associate with other practitioners or go to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong.] and those who had been "transformed". The final report was full of carelessly drawn conclusions based on psychological "explanations."
The Beijing City Judiciary and Political Committee and the 6-10 Office (an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems) maintained the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners as a political struggle. Outwardly, it seemed that judicial and legal redress were being complied with. In reality, all legal proceedings were ignored.
For example, in order to "reform" Li Chang, Wang Zhiwen, Ji Liewu and Yaojie, they mobilised massive police resources. They also required the so-called Public Prosecutor and Judge in Beijing to speedily concoct and fabricate "evidence" from all sources. The Surveillance Housing Guard maintained surveillance on every action and every movement of the Falun Dafa Research Centre staff, observing even the slightest change in emotion or mood. The information was used by psychologists to conduct careful and detailed psychological analyses to concoct new plans and ideas for reforming practitioners. The Judicial and Public Security Department was required to report their progress and findings to the Political and Judicial Committee and the 6-10 Office.
After four hectic months concocting and fabricating false evidence, they felt they had enough to move the case ahead with a guilty verdict. With this in mind, they appointed an attorney to represent the four victims. Before the actual trial, the Judge carefully rehearsed the trial proceedings to preview the occurrence and handling of any unforeseen and unexpected situation that could arise from the hearing, especially taking care in case the four victims created a problem during the trial by refusing to acknowledge the charges. With all the advance preparation, when they were sure that the case would hold, only then did they hurriedly declare the case open for court proceedings. All this was done under tight security. The public was not allowed to be present during the hearing. Only a few accused family members were summoned to be present during the trial. Their presence was prearranged with massive advance briefings in order for the case to proceed smoothly.
After the "trial," all four people were heavily sentenced with grave offences. The Judicial and Public Security Department proclaimed that they had "completed the assignment handed down from the Party line." Actually they were framing innocent people under the guise of "law and justice."
With this "victory" they became overly proud and arrogant so as to take undeserved credit, using it as an opportunity to describe the around-the-clock hard work necessary for the preparation of the trial. The overly proud and arrogant attitude was used mainly to praise the Municipal Party Committee and to eulogise the Party line.
I saw the judgement and outcome of this trial was not based on examination of evidence in order to establish whether or not any crime had been committed. Instead, the guilt was first predetermined with corroborating evidence later concocted. What's more frightening was that the so-called judge was not truly delivering a judgement based on law and facts, but admitted that the judgement was proclaimed as if it had been an assignment, according to the instructions dictated by the Municipal Party Committee.
Everybody could imagine the tremendous physical and mental pressure the four staff members of the Falun Dafa Research Centre had to undergo.
The Beijing Jail Administrative Bureau and the "Re-education Through Labour" Bureau made their report appear as if it was a "struggle." Initially, the prison and forced labour camp guards were annoyed with Falun Gong practitioners because they do not hit back when beaten and don't talk back when scolded or insulted. This made them helpless since there was nothing they could do. Later, even with physical violence, they failed to make the practitioners succumb to their demands.
Afterwards they organised so-called experts to instruct and teach them in order to help them transform Falun Gong practitioners. They started using various strategies to clamp down on practitioners. They used the isolation strategy and rearranging and scattering practitioners into various divisions along with other criminals, inmates and reformers. In this way, Falun Gong practitioners were denied any mutual contact. Psychological evaluation techniques were also used to test practitioners. They could first identify the frail and not-so-determined students in order to concentrate their effort of launching a psychological attack on them, either with the threat of so-called legal sanctions, or the threat of work-benefit sanctions, or enticement from family members and so forth, other tactics including corporal and physical punishment that were not documented in the book, to make them renounce the practise.
Regardless of the methods adopted to make Falun Gong practitioners comply with their demands, they became a bragging point or a merit badge for them, a merit badge for the "Party line." They discovered that after being transformed, people could be turned into a powerful conversion tool serving as living examples to transform others. For this reason, they would not hesitate to pay any price to launch a psychological attack. During this period Jiang's gang of scoundrels invested massive quantities of manpower and physical resources for the Labour Re-education Bureau to reform Falun Gong practitioners.
The hardships and sufferings endured by the first batch of Falun Gong practitioners illegally sentenced to hard labour were immeasurable. Once the authorities took advantage of their weaknesses and were coerced to collaborate with them, they became a tool for the evil persecutors to confuse and entice other practitioners to renounce their practise. That year the guards and from the Re-education Through Labour Bureau were particularly arrogant and cruel. Tuanhe Forced Labour Camp was the first to come up with various punishments and their experiences were introduced to the Xinan Forced Labour Camp. Later the experiences of both camps were combined, and they became the official textbook for forced labour. The book was widely promoted and used throughout all the forced labour camps in China.
I was left with a deep impression after reading the book. It enabled me to see the underlying truth and motives of Jiang's gang of scoundrels clearly. It strengthened my desire and determination in wanting to crush and dismantle their transformation methods.
Under the benevolent care and mercy of our Teacher, after two years and four months of hardships and torture, I was finally able to walk out of this den of evil or so called "Labour Camp".
