Wuhan University, a famous university in Hubei Province, received criticism and pressure from the Hubei Province 610 Office for "lacking strength in suppressing Falun Gong." In response to the pressure, Wuhan University authorities launched a persecution against university faculty and staff who steadfastly practiced Falun Gong. They did this by transferring them from their teaching posts, urging them to resign from the communist party, escorting them under custody to the "Legal Education Center" of Hubei Province for forced brainwashing, and other persecutory methods.
Wuhan University is situated in Luojiashan, Wuchang. According to information collected from the Minghui website by the Global Mission to Rescue Persecuted Falun Gong Practitioners (Global Rescue), over the past five years, at least 82 Falun Gong practitioners, kindhearted people who follow the principles of "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance," have died as a result of persecution in Hubei Province. Several thousand were arrested and tortured. Within the higher education institutions in Hubei Province, including Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Wuhan University, four Falun Gong practitioners have been tortured to death.
Since Jiang Zemin initiated the nationwide suppression of Falun Gong in July 1999, under Jiang's policy to "ruin their reputations, bankrupt them financially and destroy them physically," numerous innocent Falun Gong practitioners have been detained, sentenced, sent to labor camps and psychiatric hospitals, and some have even been tortured to death.
One hundred and seventy-eight colleges and universities, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Chongqing University, and Dalian University of Technology, have been involved in the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.
Mr. Yuan Jiang, who graduated from Tsinghua University in 1995 and majored in electronics, was tortured to death in Lanzhou City in 2001.
Ms. Wei Xingyan, a graduate student of Chongqing University, was raped by a policeman in the presence of witnesses in the Baihelin Detention Center in Shapingba District, Chongqing. Despicable cases like these have caused strong repercussions and attention in the international society.
Mr. Zhu Bao, spokesperson of Rescue Intellectuals, a subcommittee of the Global Rescue, said that, "Historical experience tells us that whoever commits crimes against people and the nation will eventually be discarded by the people and the nation, and will have to be held responsible for their crimes. Chen Zhili, China's former Minister of Education and a current State Council member who has been sued in international courts, was instrumental in carrying out Jiang Zemin's policy of persecution inside China's educational circles. She launched political movements and incited hatred in universities, middle schools and elementary schools nationwide. By committing grave crimes against people and the nation, she caused intense public indignation. If Wuhan University authorities insist on following the criminals and acting as their political henchmen, what await them will be a historical and impartial trial, as well as severe punishment.
