On April the 4th, Spanish practitioners held an anti-torture exhibition in La Rambla, an elegant boulevard in a bustling area of downtown Barcelona. Located in the centre of Barcelona, La Rambla is a primary thoroughfare that connects Plaa de Catalunua and the Statue of Christopher Columbus. Even during the era when Spain was plagued with wars, the flower shops and bookstores on La Rambla never stopped trading. In the view of the people of Barcelona, this place symbolises peacefulness and tranquillity. They are deeply proud of it. During the weekends, La Rambla is frequently packed with both local residents and tourists.
Practitioners arrived at La Rambla at ten o’clock in the morning. People started to come over and view the information boards before the practitioners could even finish setting them up. After hearing about the ongoing persecution against Falun Gong in China, they all signed their names on a petition calling for an end to the persecution.
The practitioners’ re-enactment of a few of the brutal torture methods used in cruel attempts to force Falun Gong practitioners to renounce their beliefs shocked the Spanish people. People asked what help they could offer to stop the persecution. When they were told that their signatures were needed for the petition, they lined up in front of the signature desk to sign their names. One couple said, “How could they suppress such a peaceful cultivation practice so brutally? It is hard to imagine that the Chinese people don’t even have the right to do things as simple as cultivation exercises!”
