Dear Sir,
I have been informed that in your country two innocent, good-hearted women have been unfairly arrested and heavily fined. As they declined to accept the verdict, they were sent to a female prison. Both women are now on a hunger strike to protest the unfair treatment.
Their lawyer points out that the two women were merely exercising their Constitutional rights, and such rights should not be curtailed by any other law of the land, particularly so if such laws are being arbitrarily applied by some government officials. He also said that no proof (beyond reasonable doubts) had been presented in Court.
The two women had been handing out information material about the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China. This persecution is extremely brutal. It includes slave labour, ill-treatment and torture to have practitioners renounce their belief in the good values of truth, compassion and tolerance and instead take over the corrupt values of the communist regime – a regime which even tortures to death its own citizens because of personal conviction.
According to the Constitution and international conventions which your country has ratified, the women have the right to – I would rather say it is their (and everybody’s) duty – to expose such human rights abuses. We refer to attached information in “Witness to History”.
Falun Gong practitioners are known as peaceful and good people. They have got support from MPs and governments around the world.
Only weeks ago in the Norwegian Parliament, Stortinget, representatives of major parties during an interpellation about human rights in China, expressed their concern also about the persecution of Falun Gong. The Foreign Minister confirmed that the Norwegian Government is very concerned about the human rights abuses in China, explicitly mentioning the situation of Falun Gong
There are today court cases in some 20 different countries against the former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin and his collaborators. They face charges of torture, crimes against humanity and genocide. These cases are according to the development of international law. The Swedish Government for instance plans to allow for court proceedings in Sweden against such crimes, independent of where they are carried out – a plan in the spirit of Martin Luther King jr: “A threat to justice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
Your country, unfortunately, in this case is going in the opposite direction. The court decision against the two convicted women can be considered a helping hand – even an accomplice – to the Communist regime’s persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.
I urge you, for the sake of your country and of all persons involved, to take all possible action to help rectify this situation.
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
