UK Members of Parliament are among many people who have publicly supported an end to the persecution of innocent Falun Dafa practitioners, and subsequently received slanderous propaganda materials from the Chinese embassy in London. The Chinese officials have been systematically sending materials to VIPs, non-governmental organisations and the media after reading their declarations of support on Falun Dafa websites. One Member of the European Parliament, who nominated Li Hongzhi (founder of Falun Dafa) for last year’s Nobel Peace Prize, described how he has been inundated with “vile material” and persistent phone calls, asking for the names of others who had made a nomination. He told how he was even invited to dinner by members of the Chinese embassy, and found the whole episode rude and intrusive. One UK Mayor received slanderous materials which they found upsetting, due to knowledge of the terrible abuses of human rights being suffered by Mainland Chinese Falun Dafa practitioners.
It seems that the actions of Chinese officials in the UK are having a very different effect from their intended purpose. Many public figures are already aware of the inhuman persecution occurring in China, and this mendacious material merely highlights the suspicious and underhand tactics of the Chinese representatives. One VIP described the material he received as “laughable” in its presentation and sincerely lacking in credibility. The Chinese embassy seems to be merely adding to their already tarnished reputation; UK officials and public figures are already aware of their true nature after being informed by local practitioners, and this material serves as concrete evidence of a vicious propaganda machine.
The Chinese embassy in London has already displayed a sincere disregard for freedom of speech by drowning out a recent Falun Dafa press conference with loud music (for further information, see “On World Human Rights Day, the Chinese embassy in the UK Blatantly and Shamelessly Abuses Freedom of Speech For All to Witness” - Monday, December 10, 2001 - http://clearharmony.net/articles/2160.html). This blatant abuse of human rights laws is not only occurring in the UK. The Chinese embassy in Gothenburg has been employing a similar distribution of propaganda to supporting figures of Falun Gong in Sweden. In Australia, Chinese officials poured buckets of water onto peacefully protesting Falun Gong practitioners on World Human Rights Day. With each action, the Chinese officials not only publicly expose their repressive nature, but also bring shame to the Chinese people by attempting to spread their tactics of oppression and propaganda overseas.
Representing one’s nation in a foreign country should involve honesty, respect and concern for the welfare of others. The Chinese embassy instead attempts to spread its government’s massive violation of all aspects of human rights to the rest of the world.
