After two years in a Chinese prison, the husband of a Montreal painter will finally be released.
Shen Li Lin was arrested in July 1999 after protesting in Beijing for the release of fellow members of the Falun Gong movement. He will return to Montreal in the coming days.
His wife, Jinyu Li, who has lived in Montreal since 1990, was also jailed at the time, but was incarcerated only for a few days before being deported back to Canada. At the time of the arrests, the couple had been married for nine months.
The [Falun Gong] movement is believed to have as many as 100 million members. Falun Gong has been outlawed since July 1999 after thousands protested in silence in front of the headquarters of the
Communist Party.
It's estimated that 10,000 members of Falun Gong are in Chinese prisons, work camps or psychiatric hospitals.
