Already under a cloud from a lawsuit in Tanzania, a top Chinese communist regime official was served with another lawsuit in Canada after her arrival there last week.
Former Chinese Education Minister Ms. Chen Zhili was served with a subpoena by the Supreme Court of British Columbia when she was in Vancouver on Feb. 8.
The lawsuit was filed by five Canadian Falun Gong practitioners who worked or studied in the Chinese educational system. The charges include torture and crimes against humanity during Chen's tenure as Minister of Education during 1998-2003.
The five Canadians suing Chen are Zhang Kunlun, Jin Rong, Liu Wenyu, Zhu Ying and Guo Zhaoxia. The suit asks for $20 million in compensation.
Although denied by Chinese communist regime websites, Chen Zhili appeared in judge's chambers in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, on July 19, 2004 in response to a complaint of torture, extrajudicial killing, and genocide. Among several dozen lawsuits filed in numerous countries by Falun Gong practitioners, this was significant because it was the first time a communist official faced charges in person.
The lawyer assisting the Falun Gong practitioners in Canada, David Matas, said in a statement, "Chen Zhili, as Minister of Education, controlled and implemented policies and operations that targeted and persecuted Falun Gong practitioners in China's education system. She personally and intentionally directed, supported, supervised, and condoned...the systematic persecution and torture of the Falun Gong practitioners in China's education system."
