Grip Tightens on Media
Members of the Beijing foreign press corps are coming under the greatest level of official surveillance in years. In recent days, plain-clothes security officers have followed selected reporters around on foot, by car and by motorcycle. Up to three cars of four security officers each wait outside the journalists' homes and offices. Guards at even commercial and residential complexes ask when journalists will be coming and going, and carry out repeated "smoke-alarm checks" on offices. The catalyst for the increase in surveillance appears to be a change in tactics by the Falun Gong spiritual movement, which has organized large groups of foreigners to demonstrate in its support in Tiananmen Square. The surveillance appears aimed at dissuading journalists from covering the protests
