Mr Brian Coleman is a member of the Greater London Assembly. He made the following speech at the European Friends of Falun Gong seminar on 27 February in the House of Commons:
“I have a sizeable Chinese community in my constituency and I have a very large diverse and mixed constituency, which is typical of London. That is the great thing about being involved in London politics, we have such wide varieties in our constituencies, and of course many of them engage in practices different from those I engage in, but we defend the right of all our different communities in London to practise what they believe in a free way.
I and a couple of colleagues went to a very strange reception the other week at the Chinese embassy. Each of us went armed with two cases of individuals detained in China. I produced the two Falun Gong cases which I prepared to the First secretary and the Ambassador. The Ambassador promised to get to me. So far I have not received any reply. Isn’t that strange?
But, that is the way we can do it. That is the way in the 1980s we could get Jews out of Russia, by banging on about individual cases, to the Russian ambassador. That is the way we have to support Falun Gong by banging on to the Chinese Ambassador and Chinese government about individuals who are unjustly detained in China. Citizens of London who cannot get visas to visit their relatives in China, and now in the last few weeks, we have had brutal treatment of Europeans and Americans who have been protesting in Tiananmen Square and elsewhere. So I am happy to be here this afternoon. I am delighted to continue my support for Falun Gong on behalf of my constituents in London.
Thank you.
Mr Brian Coleman
