On July 26th, 2006, officials at the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa, Canada held a press conference and published a statement in which the embassy denies that organ harvesting from living Falun Gong practitioners has ever taken place in China. The statement also attacks the two independent investigators, Mr. Kilgour and Mr. Matas, and the Falun Gong cultivation group. The statement ignores the important facts and evidence addressed in the independent report, twists the content and meaning of the report, and incites hatred against Falun Gong.
In addition to denying the authenticity of the report, the embassy officials used the majority of their statement--five out of eight paragraphs--to attack Falun Gong.
Falun Gong practitioners in Canada feel obligated to respond to the embassy's statement. This article provides a detailed analysis of the points expressed in the Chinese embassy's statement. We will see who "promotes lies and false accusations that are biased and totally groundless." We believe the readers will draw the correct conclusions.
Being unable to deny the facts of live organ harvesting equals admitting the charges
The statement from the Chinese Embassy is full of irrational conclusions and empty accusations, completely ignores the facts and evidence presented in the independent report. The statement does not provide any reasonable explanation based on fact to address any of the 18 categories of evidence presented in the independent report. These important facts include: the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP>I) genocidal persecution policy against Falun Gong; its nationwide persecution; hate propaganda; large scale arrests; the large number of Falun Gong practitioners missing; widespread blood tests of detained Falun Gong practitioners; actual incidents of removing organs from Falun Gong practitioners persecuted to death; large numbers of transplant surgeries using organs of unknown sources; telephone recordings from organ transplant doctors who admitted using Falun Gong practitioners' organs; testimony from the ex-wife of a surgeon who performed organ removals, and all the criminal evidence that appeared on Chinese websites. The Chinese embassy's statement does at least prove one point: the CCP cannot deny the charges with facts. This indicates that the conclusions of the independent report are based on a solid footing.
The statement says, "China bans human organ sales." The investigators responded to this claim in their report, saying, "This statement was belied by the facts. The China International Transplantation Network Assistance Centre Website until April of this year set out a price list for transplants. (i.e. a heart costs US$160,000) The price list was removed from the website in April, but is still archived. As well, many individuals can attest to paying for organ transplants in China."
The Changzheng Hospital website in Shanghai still has a price list up even now: "The cost for a liver transplant is 200,000 Yuan, and the average wait time for a liver transplant at our hospital is one week."
About the embassy's claim that China has consistently abided by the principle stipulating that donors' written consent must be obtained beforehand, the independent report pointed out, "The other identified sources of organ transplants, willing family donors and the brain dead, have always been tiny. In 2005, living-related kidney transplant consists of 0.5% of total transplants nation-wide. The total of brain dead donors for all years and all of China is 9 up to March 2006." Where do the other 99% of the organs come from?
The independent report says, "There is no indication of a significant increase in either of these categories in recent years. Presumably the identified sources of organ transplants which produced 18,500 organ transplants in the six year period 1994 to 1999 produced the same number of organs for transplants in the next six year period 2000 to 2005. That means that the source of 41,500 transplants for the six year period 2000 to 2005 is unexplained. Where do the organs come from for the 41,500 transplants? The allegation of organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners provides an answer."
The authors of the independent report wrote, "Every finding we make is sourced and independently verifiable." If the CCP officials cannot provide any reasonable explanation or denial for the "verifiable" key facts, then we can conclude that the charges in the independent report are true; namely, "there has been and continues today to be large scale organ seizures from unwilling Falun Gong practitioners."
Denying the existence of secret concentration camps cannot prove one's innocence
Every time the Chinese embassy denies organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners, they quote a U.S. embassy official who said, "We did not find evidence showing this hospital's function exceeds that of a typical hospital." But the U.S. embassy official visited the hospital several weeks after the the crimes at the Sujiatun Concentration Camp were exposed, and the official on tour was accompanied by the hospital's leadership. Think about it: let's say a murderer kills someone, then he cleans up the crime site and disposes of the evidence. Later, the killer takes people to view the site to prove his innocence. Of course people will not get to see any evidence.
On the one hand, the murderer had enough time to move the detainees and clean up the crime site. On the other hand, the surgical equipment used to remove Falun Gong practitioners' organs is not different from ordinary surgical equipment; how could a visitor tell whether this equipment had been used to remove organs or not? The official did not find evidence. This merely means the official did not see an organ harvesting procedures during that particular visit, but that does not prove that "the organ harvesting from living Falun Gong practitioners in secret concentration camps" never happened.
The CCP slaughtered hundreds of students and citizens with heavy weapons during the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, but after they washed the blood away, they denied that they ever killed anyone, and continue to do so today. Likewise, a couple of years ago when SARS was spreading in China, the CCP moved SARS patients around by bus surreptitiously, playing hide-and-seek with the World Health Organisation investigators.
Organ harvesting from living Falun Gong practitioners is not confined to one hospital, or only to several doctors; it is a widespread practice in many places in China. If the CCP indeed wants to prove its innocence, then it should open all the forced labour camps, detention centres, prisons and hospitals to an unimpeded international investigation and let the facts be known to the world.
Twisting the facts to cause confusion
The embassy's July 26th statement intentionally interchanged "cornea removal" with "cornea implantation surgery" and furthermore attacked the witnesses and their testimony, asserting the claim that the doctor "personally removed the corneas from approximately 2000 anaesthetised Falun Gong prisoners
during the two year period" is "a ridiculous lie that no rational person will believe."
"Cornea removal" and "cornea transplant surgery" are completely different operations. According to British Optometrist Dr. Mohan Rajan, an eye ball removal operation takes only 10 to 20 minutes. (please refer http://www.webhealthcentre.com/expertspeak/eye_donation.asp, http://www.centralchronicle.com/20050830/3008307.htm for detail) Therefore, a doctor would be quite capable of completing three cornea removal operations per day, which is not a "ridiculous lie."
In fact, what the surgeon did was to "remove corneas from approximately 2000 anaesthetised Falun Gong prisoners." Not only that, these Falun Gong practitioners' other important organs such as kidneys, livers, hearts and lungs were removed by other surgeons. After the slaughter took place, their remains were cremated.
The CCP has turned the doctors into murderers driven by profit and oppressive policy. This is a cruel crime against humanity.
Chinese embassy statement brings hate propaganda to Canada again
The Chinese embassy stops at nothing to instigate conflict. It claims that Falun Gong practitioners are a tiny minority among the Chinese people, as if the number of people has given the totalitarian government an excuse to trample their human rights. One cannot help but recall the CCP's evil logic of using "majorities" to crush "minorities," and to instigate hatred of those being persecuted in all of its past political movements. The Chinese embassy's statement vividly reveals the CCP's nature of using its power to despotically bully the weak, setting people at odds, and estranging the populace. The statement is full of slanderous hate propaganda against Falun Gong.
When independent investigator Mr. Matas was interviewed about the Chinese embassy statement, he said: "This is an exact copy of the CCP's smear campaign against Falun Gong. This kind of slandering to some degree was one of the factors that led to today's investigation. I mean, there is a group of people; they were isolated and labelled as aliens; their rights were taken away; they were treated as unworthy people and insulted; finally they were no longer being viewed as humans. Then harvesting organs from them became much easier."
The two investigators have respected legal backgrounds. In their response to the statement, they wrote: "Calling the Falun Gong an evil cult exemplifies the vilification heaped on the Falun Gong. It is this sort of slander which, in China, depersonalises and dehumanises the Falun Gong and makes possible the violation of their basic human rights. Calling a group of innocent civilians an 'evil cult' is a form of incitement to hatred, unacceptable in Canada. It is an abuse of their diplomatic presence in Canada for China to engage in this form of incitement."
We are fully confident that the facts will reveal to all people that the CCP, while hiding behind a nation and its people and portraying itself as a creator of happiness, has actually been perpetrating what the independent investigators called "a grotesque form of evil which, despite all the deprivations humanity has seen, would be new to this planet."
