On February 8th, NBC 5 TV reported on the recent interference from the Chinese government to the NTDTV New Year Spectacular in Chicago. The report said that the Chinese regime is trying to keep people from seeing it and yet the show will go on. Below are excerpts from the transcript of the report:
It has been advertised as the Chinese new year Spectacular, celebrating Chinese culture.
So why is the Chinese government trying to keep people from seeing it.
That is the allegation being made tonight by the Sound of Hope Radio [SOH], the organisation backing this event.
"We report uncensored news, culture, about China to let people know the very important stories that the Chinese government doesn't like. So they are trying hard to shut our voice." [Dr. Yi Liu from SOH]
A voice that Sound of Hope and New Tang Dynasty TV admit including things drawn not only from Taoism and Buddhism, but also from Falun Gong, a controversial meditative movement that was banned by the Chinese government in 1999. [Editor's note: Falun Gong is an ancient and peaceful practice for mind and body.]
The event is scheduled for March 3rd here at the Auditorium Theatre. Already, the organisation says that 3,400 tickets have been sold. But the group says someone in China has been tying up their phone lines and the consulate has been calling the event's sponsors which included NBC 5 TV.
"Some of our sponsors admitted that they received either letters or phone calls from the Chicago Chinese consulate telling them not to support our event." [Dr. Liu]
Despite the interference, Sound of Hope and NTDTV said that the show will go on.
