Germany: Exposing the Truth about Falun Gong in Berlin

On July 21st, 2007, Falun Gong practitioners organised an event at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin to expose the brutal persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China. The persecution began on July 20th 1999 and Falun Gong was officially banned in China on July 22nd, 1999.

Despite a gloomy weather forecast, the sun shone until the end of the day. The weather was kind to the people during that day. Shortly after the information booth was set up, passersby stopped by and asked the reason for this information booth. Therefore, the practitioners were busy throughout the day, explaining everything to the people.

This area, in the middle of Berlin at the Brandenburg Gate, used to separate East and West Berlin and is a popular tourist spot. Many tourists visit there, among them also Chinese people. Most tourists will accept a flyer. Some also looked at our display boards. While there, the importance of having English speaking practitioners present became quite clear. We also had practitioners who spoke Spanish with us.

All practitioners made sure to address and speak to all Chinese tourists and assure that they accept at least one flyer or the “Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party” (1). Sadly, one could see fear in the faces of the Chinese people, who still are being told lies about Falun Gong practitioners. Although there were some young Chinese people who took pictures of the practitioners'banners. We sincerely hope that they will tell their relatives and friends in China that they have seen a Falun Gong event in Berlin in a public place.

During that day, we also made sure to tell the German citizens about the torch relay for human rights that was going to be arranged by the Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong in China (CIPFG). CIPFG sent an official letter to the Chinese regime, demanding an immediate end to the persecution of Falun Gong. The CIPFG told the Chinese Regime if it should not respond by August the 8th and stop the persecution, it would call for a world-wide boycott of the Olympic Games in Beijing and organise a torch relay. This announcement was well received and many of the citizens were quite interested to hear more about it. There were also many people who signed the petition calling for an end to the persecution on that day.

We all realised during this event as to how the situation had changed during the eight years. During our first Berlin information booth event to expose the persecution in China, many people hesitated to listen to us. They often took the long way around our information booth or had a skeptic look in their face. Now, the people approach the practitioners. They openly ask, “What is Falun Gong?” or “Why is Falun Gong persecuted?” and they express with deep indignation that such a brutal persecution should not be allowed to exist, especially in a country that will hold the Olympic games.

Therefore, all practitioners hope that more people will distance themselves from that persecution. Once all people will hold such a thought in their heart, the evil in China loses all its power and can no longer exist.
