A State-run enterprise in China was closed in 1999. Four of the top managers thus became unemployed and were unable to find new jobs due to their lack of skills. The four former managers were Qin, a former Communist Party Secretary; Wang, a former Chairman; Zeng, a former Department Manager; and Yuan, a former Director.
Qin was a friend of Mr. Li, the General Manager of a private enterprise where I was working. The enterprise urgently needed some management staff at the time. Qin begged Mr. Li to offer them the positions. Reluctantly, Mr. Li agreed.
At the beginning of their employment period, the four were modest and respected Mr. Li. However, within less than six months, they revealed their greedy and corrupt natures. They spent company money on frequenting brothels, gambling and drinking, just as they had done in the previous State-run enterprise. Their behavior seriously jeopardized the interest of the company, which was a profitable entity.
Mr. Li became very angry with them. However, Li still respected their friendship so much that it was hard for him to take action to dismiss them from their positions.
Since July of this year, the domestic market has been affected by the global financial crisis. The Board of Directors decided that our company had to dismiss some employees and Qin, Wang, Zeng and Yuan were the first personnel to go.
Qin and the other three were upset and went to Mr. Li’s office to argue about the dismissal.
Qin said to Mr. Li, “You didn’t dismiss the one who is a Falun Gong practitioner. Instead, you dismiss us even though we are Communist Party members. Don’t you think that you have done something wrong?”
Mr. Li was unhappy and replied, “Qin, do you know this is not a State-run company but a private enterprise? Your corrupt behavior made the State-run enterprise collapse and you are doing the same thing to my enterprise. I can’t tolerate your behavior any more. The Falun Gong practitioner is much better than you are. He is reliable and responsible and never does bad things. He never spends company money on personal expenses and doesn’t take company property home. The last time our company distributed moon cakes to staff, he distributed more than he should by accident. Nobody noticed, but he returned moon cakes to the company. He is healthy and fit and has never taken one sick day nor claimed any medical expenses in the past nine years. He is so highly qualified and skilled at his work that the four of you would never be able to compete with him. In order to care of my 2000 employees, I must offer a promotion to the Falun Gong practitioner and dismiss you Communist Party members.”
