On March 5th, 2009, the Republic of China Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee member, and EngiTek Engineering Firm president Dr. Fang Benren and his wife were in the audience of the Divine Performing Arts (DPA) show at the Providence Performing Arts Center in Rhode Island, United States. They said that the show was splendid and profound in its depiction of the Chinese culture.
Dr. Fang Benren and wife praised the show's unique production and were deeply touched |
This was the second time they have seen DPA perform.
Mr. Fan said, "Every scene is creative, artistic and philosophical and truly touches people's hearts."
He continued: "The orchestra, composed of Chinese and Western musical instruments, is very unique."
Dr. Fang is an accomplished scholar. He speaks Mandarin, Taiwanese, Japanese, English, German and Portuguese. He shared that according to historical data, Japan's written records began during the Tang Dynasty. Japanese clothing evolved from that worn during the Tang Dynasty. Chinese history is long and glorious. He said that DPA's mission to bring the 5,000-year-old Chinese culture to the world through the arts helps people understand traditional Chinese culture, and this is indeed very good!
He thinks that the Chinese culture is delicate and harmonious and emphasises "tranquility." He explained that this is important to the Chinese people, who study spiritual principles, especially to those who sit in meditation. Meanwhile Western culture emphasises "movement," and the colour contrast is loud and rough because westerners have lots of imagination, and promote abstraction and fantasy art, regardless of whether people can understand it. He gave an example - there is a very big sculpture in the courtyard of a Chicago bank. It does not rust or fade, but no one knows what it represents.
Dr. Fang is a former professor from Rhode Island University. He established his own company in 1986, and is well-known in the structural engineering field. He likes classical music, played the harmonica and guitar and joined a choir as a youngster.
He was astonished to learn that DPA has three Companies touring the globe simultaneously. He said it is not easy to have such a high level cultural performance in the U.S.
DPA's mission is to promote and develop authentic Chinese culture. This enables people to treasure and retain cultural traditions of the Chinese nation. DPA has revived the essence of the divinely inspired culture.
Writer: Very Educational
DPA's performance in Providence attracted people of all circles. Some writers and media professionals highly praised the exquisite performance, but were even more amazed by the spiritual connotation brought to the public through artistic expression.
Harry Anderson, columnist of the Springfield Magazine, said: "I felt fortunate to see this show. I really appreciate the people who told me about it. It is simply very good, and very educational."
Christine McDermott, chief editor at a New England newspaper, attended the show with her mother.
She said: "This is an exceedingly good opportunity. You can learn about Chinese traditional culture without leaving Rhode Island...The dance scenes are beautiful, (Chinese classical dance) and the movements are exquisite...the entire scene is unforgettable."
But what touched Ms. McDermott's heart was the spiritual message.
She said: "This is a very good message. It tells people to take material interests in the human world lightly and cherish these kinds of relationships. Especially during the current economical downturn, this is so important."
