The incoming home affairs minister has said the Falun Gong will not be banned in Hong Kong as long as members do not jeopardise public order or safety. Patrick Ho Chi-ping toed the government line when asked about remarks by Vice-Premier Qian Qichen on the [Falun Gong].
Mr Qian said in a TVB interview on Tuesday that [Falun Gong], which is banned on the mainland, should also be outlawed in the SAR after the enactment of an anti-subversion law if it maintained ties with foreign groups. Dr Ho said: " Falun Gong is a registered body and is protected by the ordinance of societies registration. It has the right to exist. "I believe that it may continue to exist as long as it does not jeopardise public order or safety."
When asked how he would handle other sensitive issues, Dr Ho said he would follow the rule of law and judge their degree of public acceptance. […]
