Your Excellency,
We wish to state our protest at the continued persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in the People's Republic of China. Tens of thousands of practitioners of this peaceful spiritual movement have been imprisoned and tortured by the Chinese authorities since July 1999.
Many practitioners have died as a result of ill treatment and torture in labour camps, prisons, mental institutions and various detention centres throughout China. Many college and school students have been expelled from their classes, families have been broken up and workers have lost their jobs because of their adherence to the practice of Falun Gong.
Falun Gong is an ancient spiritual practice, which is totally peaceful and law-abiding. Its stated principles are Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance. Because Falun Gong practitioners do not use or condone the use of violence, those who are imprisoned for their belief in Falun Gong are regarded as prisoners of conscience. Torture is forbidden by the United Nations Convention Against Torture, to which China is a state party, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
We call on the government of the Peoples Republic of China to end the persecution of Falun Gong and to release all practitioners who have been imprisoned and detained for their peaceful beliefs. We also appeal to the Chinese authorities to publicly investigate all allegations of torture and to bring to justice those convicted of ill-treating or torturing prisoners or detainees. We further appeal for a public investigation into all deaths in suspicious circumstances of Falun Gong practitioners.
Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of our highest consideration.
Yours Sincerely,
On behalf of
