As fellow world citizens, we appeal for your support in expressing your deep concern over the unprecedented, so-called trial of peaceful Falun Gong practitioners currently underway in Hong Kong. Falun Gong is a legally registered group in Hong Kong. Yet recently, officials have moved to kowtow to Beijing to curb Falun Gong’s right to peaceful appeal in Hong Kong. Falun Gong practitioners are good people, and the appeals by Falun Gong practitioners worldwide have always been peaceful. Officials in host countries have remarked that the behaviour of appealing Falun Gong practitioners presents “a model of good order.”
In brief, the charges brought against 12 Hong Kong Chinese and 4 Swiss nationals, all Falun Gong practitioners, include obstruction of the sidewalk, and assaulting a police officer. Yet actual video footage, photographs, trial testimony and evidence confirm that Falun Gong’s appeal was small, orderly, contained, and peaceful. Video footage of the scene clearly illustrates the unreasonably behaviour of the police and the disregard for human rights. On arrival to the peaceful scene, the police moved to fence off the entire area, park squad cars, use a loudspeaker, and hold a press conference, thus completely blocking the entrance to the building. On arrest, practitioners were treated with forceful and violent means, including choking, and the painful squeezing of pressure points. The 4 Swiss nationals were not provided with an adequate interpreter.
Falun Gong practitioners cultivate Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance in their daily lives. They act with kindness, seek self-improvement, and learn to place the interests of others before their own. Subject to three years of vicious persecution and slander by the Chinese president, practitioners do not fight back and strive to conduct themselves nobly and in an upright manner, appealing to end the persecution using only peaceful means. They have touched the hearts of millions with their determined kind hearts.
The trial so far been nothing more than a sham. It is a political show trial carried out on political grounds and with political motivation. The outcome will affect the future course of Hong Kong’s democratic freedoms. Not only is the freedom to practice Falun Gong at risk, also at stake are nothing less than the rights to freedom of belief, freedom of speech and freedom of assembly.
For the benefit of all, this is an opportunity to step forward to protect freedom and justice and ask the Hong Kong government to uphold the “one country two-systems” policy. We would greatly appreciate your help in conveying a message of grave international concern about the handling of this trial to the Hong Kong government, the Hong Kong judiciary, and the Swiss embassy. To really make a difference, your immediate attention to this matter is of utmost importance.
