Mr Zheng Xujun and his wife, Su Nan |
ZHENG Xujun, male, 33, was a Ph.D student in the Research Institute of Science of Electric Powerin China. Due to his excellent performance, he was sent to Liverpool University (UK) for a joint research project in January 1999. He stayed at the University till July 1999 as a visiting scholar. In his spare time, he ran a weekly Falun Gong exercise class in Liverpool that was free and open to all in his local community. He also attended Falun Gong events, such as the European Falun Dafa experience sharing conference in Paris at the beginning of July 1999.
Upon knowing that Falun Gong practitioners were being unjustly treated after 25th April 1999, he went to the Chinese Embassy in the UK to tell the facts about Falun Gong to the delegates there. In July 1999, he finished his work in the UK and went back to China where he was placed under strict surveillance because of his appeal to the Chinese Embassy in the UK. After Jiang Zemin launched the brutal persecution of Falun Gong on July 20th 1999, he went to appeal for Falun Gong and was badly beaten. He was then regarded as a key Falun Gong practitioner in the Department of Electric Power, and was frequently harassed, being re-educated nearly every day.
With his study suspended in January 2000, he was forced to take a brainwashing class, and was later made to discontinue his study. For resisting the persecution, he had to leave his home and wander about with nowhere to live. In September 2001 he was illegally arrested. His wife had previously been sentenced to three years imprisonment for distributing Falun Gong leaflets detailing the truth of the vicious persecution. In the detention centre, he was beaten about his chest and face by the prisoners whose actions were instigated by the police, and then he went missing. His father (over 70 years old) went to Bejing from the countryside of Zhejiang province to inquire about his whereabouts, but the police refused to give him any information as to the whereabouts of his son. The old man had to go back to his home in a tearful state. It was not until six months later that his parents were told that he had been sentenced to two years in a forced labour camp. He is now detained in Beijing Tuanhe Labour Camp.
SU Nan, 33, is the wife of Mr Zheng and was a magistrate in the General Accoutrements Department of the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army. In March 1999, she was illegally imprisoned for appealing for Falun Gong and was jailed for 5 months. In June 2000, her Chinese Communist party membership and military status were terminated due to her husbands persistence in practising Falun Gong. In September 2000, Ms Su was arrested in Beijing Qinghe Police Station, and then detained in Beijing Haidian Detention Centre after being badly beaten. In January 2001, she was sentenced to three years in a forced labour camp. She is now jailed in the First Female Prison of Sichuan Province. Ms Su has even been handcuffed to a window for over 40 days. She has suffered unimaginable torments.
