Germany: Postcard Activity to Rescue Xiong Wei

Xiong Wei is a female Falun Gong practitioner, who was previously studying at Berlin University. She was arrested for distributing flyers in Beijing and is now imprisoned in a detention centre in China where she could be suffering torture, beatings or worse. To attempt to rescue her, the German Falun Dafa Association, the International Human Rights Association (IGFM) and the Association of German and Chinese Cultural Relations began a postcard signing campaign on her behalf.

The postcard campaign was created to make it easy for people to appeal for Xiong Wei’s release. Many postcards were made containing a plea for the freedom of Xiong Wei and addressed to the German Prime Minister. People could therefore sign the cards and post them very quickly. The success of the campaign was widespread; on December 19, 2002, Heidenheim Weekly, a weekly journal which is sent to every house in the area, reported on the postcard campaign. The report also contained photos of the front and back of the postcard, which allowed readers to cut them out and send them to the German Prime Minister.

Another example of the widespread success was the acceptance of the postcards in the community. After visiting stores to ask to display the postcards, all of the stores supported us. This gave an opportunity to clarify the truth about the persecution to those whom we talked with. Some of the store workers even told their customers about the postcards.

German practitioners would like to thank Heidenheim Weekly and the stores who received the postcards. We hope that the activity can help Xiong Wei and other Falun Gong practitioners who are imprisoned to regain their freedom. It is hard for those of us who live in democratic countries, to imagine that people are being captured and tortured without legal proceedings because of their belief. Therefore, we hope that more people can learn what is happening in China and sincerely oppose these serious violations of human rights and crimes against humanity.
