Many people stopped to take a close look at the large banner in Italian that read, "Stop Killing Falun Gong Practitioners". They also saw the big photos of the persecution of Falun Gong in China. Some of them started to learn the Falun Gong exercises on the spot. Because practitioners have been appealing in front of the consulate for a long time, many people working in nearby shops have become friends with them. When they learned that at least 43 more Falun Gong practitioners have lost their lives since November due to the persecution, they were shocked and said that they simply could not understand why the Jiang regime is treating ordinary Chinese people with such brutality. They were deeply moved by the peaceful appeals of Falun Gong practitioners in the cold wind, and offered coffee and chocolates to them. A gentleman who often walks past there said to the practitioners, "I have read about you in the newspaper, I hope you will continue with your efforts."
Many people learned that Jiang is a defendant in a lawsuit, initiated by Falun Gong practitioner, which charges him with the crimes of genocide and anti-humanity in the U.S.
On January 13, before the court session in the U.S. started, practitioners went the consulate to deliver an open letter, which was rejected by the staff under the excuse that the person in charge was not in. The letter was then read aloud in front of the consulate. Practitioners planned to deliver the letter again during the office hours on January 15.
During the appeals, the most influential newspaper in Italy (CORRIERE DELLA SERA) sent journalists to cover the whole event, and a report was published the next day.
