Consul General
Myanmar Consulate General in Hong Kong
Room 2421, Sun Hung Kai Centre,
30 Harbour Road, Wan Chai Hong Kong
January 23 2002
Dear Mr. Myo Chit,
I am writing to you about an issue of great concern to me; a permanent Hong Kong resident has been wrongfully imprisoned in Rangoon since January 2002.
On 12/12/2001, Mr. Chan Wing Yuen, a 70-year-old man was arrested in Rangoon after he displayed a banner that read Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance in anticipation of a visit by Chinas President Jiang Zemin, who is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Falun Gong practitioners.
Mr. Chan was consequently sentenced to 7-years in prison without legal representation or the presence of his family members. Under pressure from the local Chinese Embassy, local police had demanded that Mr. Chan give a written promise to renounce his belief in Falun Gong in exchange for his freedom.
I believe that Mr. Chans actions were peaceful and did not cause any public disruption, nor could the message have offended anyone. I also believe that the sentence received is unlawful and unacceptable by todays international human rights standards.
Through worldwide reports from governmental sources, human rights organisations and other third party reports, I have learned how Jiang Zemin has attempted to force his persecution abroad with death threats, beatings, destruction of property, refusal to renew passports etc. Myanmar is another example of his attempted extension of the persecution.
I call upon you, Mr. Myo Chit, to speak up for justice and request for the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Chan. A person should not be persecuted for revealing the truth.
Warm Regards
