Ms. Jiang Meilan, 65, from Yongzhou, Hunan Province Dies After Being Persecuted at a Brainwashing Centre

A policeman and a policewoman from Xintian County Domestic Security Team at Yongzhou, Hunan Province went to Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Jiang Meilan's home at around 11:00 a.m. on the morning of September 7th, 2012. Mr. Jiang Meilan was not home at the time. Ms. Jiang's husband, who is in his seventies, knew these police officers. The policeman was his son's classmate and the policewoman is his friend's daughter. Since the two are his old acquaintances, the elderly man was touched by their concern toward Ms. Jiang. Ms. Jiang's husband told them, “She went out to buy some chillies, she'll be back soon.” The elderly man engaged in some small talk with them, and told them the truth about Falun Gong. The two police officers waited for Ms. Jiang to come back.

Mr. Jiang came home at around noon. Suddenly three more police officers stepped into the home and announced that the 18th Congressional Conference of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was approaching, so Ms. Jiang had to do some “learning” in Lingling District, Yongzhou. One large police officer was especially arrogant. Ms. Jiang's husband strongly condemned their thuggish behaviour, and the elderly couple did not cooperate with the officers. By that time, the neighbours had come over and were urging the police not to arrest a kind elderly woman. The officers didn't listen to the bystanders, and they dragged Ms. Jiang away. Ms. Jiang shouted, “Falun Gong is good” as she was taken to the police car.

Ms. Jiang Meilan, 65, is retired from the Hunan Transportation Company in Xintian County, Yongzhou. After the CCP started persecuting Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Jiang was imprisoned at Baimalong Forced Labour Camp in Zhuzhou, from 2001 to 2003, where she was subjected to much physical and mental torture. Ms. Jiang was arrested on March 24th, 2005 in Zixing County in Chenzhou again, and was sentenced to one year of forced labour and sent to Baimalong Forced Labour Camp again. Ms. Jiang held a hunger strike for one hundred days to protest the persecution. Ms. Jiang remained healthy after she was released.

Assistant secretary He Xin at the Political Affairs Commission of Xintian County was named local 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) leader in 2011. He Xin and the assistant leader Liu Tingni have since collaborated with the Domestic Security Division, and harassed and threatened Falun Gong practitioners at their homes. In November 2011, He Xin and Liu Tingni went to Ms. Jiang's home twice and attempted to arrest her and take her to a brainwashing centre. They did not succeed because Ms. Jiang was not at home. Xintian County 610 Office sent Tang Chongsheng, who is the Domestic Security Division group leader, along with Yang Haibo, Li Fang, and two others from the Domestic Security Division to arrest Ms. Jiang on September 7th.

The “Legal System Education and Training Centre of Changsha, Hunan” is located in Zhongling Village, Laodaohe Township, Kaifu District, Changsha. It has been used by Hunan Provincial 610 Office specifically to brainwash Falun Gong practitioners since 2002. Over the past decade, the centre has violated Falun Gong practitioners' freedom of belief and human rights. It has imprisoned many hundreds of Falun Gong practitioners from Hunan.

After Xintian Domestic Security Division arrested Ms. Jiang Meilan on September 7th, the domestic security division and the local 610 Office concealed Ms. Jiang's whereabouts. They gave Ms. Jiang's family a wrong address, and a few days later gave her family another wrong and vague address: Former Government Official Training Centre, Zhongqing Road, Changsha. Ms. Jiang's family asked for the telephone number and mailing address of where Ms. Jiang was detained, and Li Fang from the domestic security division said, “I was taken there by other people at night, I don't know the address.” The domestic security division emphasized several times, “The mailing address can not be given to families.” Ms. Jiang's family and relatives searched for Ms. Jiang's whereabouts all over Changsha. Ms. Jiang's son came to Changsha from Guangzhou to look for his mother. He searched every corner of Zhongqing Road, but there was no such place as the “Government Official Training Centre.” After many inquiries, Ms. Jiang's family finally found her at the Laodaohe Brainwashing Centre. The family was only allowed to bring some clothes for Ms. Jiang, and not allowed to see her or call her on the telephone. Ms. Jiang was down to her last breath by late September, and was in critical condition. Her family took her out from the brainwashing centre on October 1st and took her to the hospital emergency department. Ms. Jiang passed away on October 2nd.

Ms. Jiang's family and friends were shocked by her death. Ms. Jiang was a strong-willed woman, and she was fine after 100 days of hunger strike at Baimalong Forced Labour Camp. This time, Ms. Jiang was in critical condition and passed away after spending 23 days at the “Legal System Education and Training Centre of Changsha, Hunan,” also known as Laodaohe Brainwashing Centre. What exactly did the brainwashing centre do to persecute Ms. Jiang to the point of her losing her life?
