Ms. Wu Yueju Beaten, 61, Shocked, and Sexually Assaulted

Ms. Wu Yueju, a 61-year-old Falun Gong practitioner, and another practitioner surnamed Duan, from Dalian City, Liaoning Province, were arrested on April 25th for making informational materials about the persecution of Falun Gong. After being taken to a forced labour camp in Dalian City, Ms. Duan was released due to medical reasons, while Ms. Wu is still being held.

Since the start of the persecution in 1999, Ms. Wu has been arrested seven times and sent to forced labour camps three times, where she spent a total of eight years. Prison guards and inmates handcuffed her to a tiger bench¹, shocked her with electric batons, poured cold water on her in winter and tied her to a death bed², . They also inserted a toothbrush into her private part and burned her breasts with hot water. Ms. Wu narrowly escaped death each time she was tortured.

Handcuffed to a Tiger Bench

In the autumn of 1999, Ms. Wu went to appeal for Falun Gong in Beijing. She was arrested and sent to the Pulandian Detention Centre, where guards handcuffed and shackled Ms. Wu to a tiger bench for seven days, causing her buttocks to swell severely. In April 2000, Ms. Wu was released after her 80-year-old father was tricked into paying 2,000 yuan³ for the food that she had eaten while being detained for seven months. Those involved in persecuting Ms. Wu include police officer Wang Qiang, community directors Chang Yu'e and Liu Wanxiang, captain of the Pulandian Detention Centre Guan Lijuan (female), and a Public Security Bureau director with the surname Wang.

Ms. Wu Violently Beaten in Hebei Sanhe Detention Centre

In September 2000, Ms. Wu again went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. She was arrested and sent to the Sanhe Detention Centre in Hebei Province, where she was beaten and searched. Police officer Wang Qiang and local 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) agent recognized Ms. Wu and forcibly escorted her back to her hometown.

In November 2000, Ms. Wu was sent to the Dalian Forced Labour Camp, where she was subjected to electric shocks, sexual assault, hanging, and having cold water poured over her while tied to a death bed during winter. The captain of the camp, Han Jianmin, tied Ms. Wu up in an iron cage and told her, “I'll give you an injection before sending you to a psychiatric hospital. Then we'll see if you can still practise Falun Gong!” Ms. Wu was tortured like this for over three years and released in December 2003.

In January 2004, Ms. Wu was again arrested and sent to the Dalian Forced Labour Camp. Han Jianmin mentioned to officer Fan Wei (female) that Ms. Wu had exposed her on the Internet after being released in 2003. Enraged by the news, Fan told an inmate to tie Ms. Wu up in an iron cage, and then ordered the inmate to pour cold water down Ms. Wu's neck. After enduring 27 hours of torture, Ms. Wu's hand was left seriously injured.

Another inmate, Cui Jinnan, a prostitute, stuffed Ms. Wu's mouth with dirty socks and sanitary pads, and then prodded Ms. Wu's private part with a toothbrush. She hung Ms. Wu up, wrote words on a sign slandering Master Li, then draped the sign over Ms. Wu's neck. Cui cursed Ms. Wu as she repeatedly punched her in the nose, soaking the front of Ms. Wu's body with blood. She stripped Ms. Wu naked, pulled her hair, poured congee over her face and head, and then poured cold water all over her. Cui told Ms. Wu that she would handcuff and torture her if she didn't recite the prison rules and regulations.

Another inmate, Zhang Xiujuan, ordered Cui to pour boiling water on Ms. Wu's breasts. Ms. Wu was so disfigured from all the torture that her aunt couldn't even recognize her when she visited her in the hospital. When the aunt inquired about Ms. Wu's horrific condition, Wan Yalin, deputy captain of the women's division, didn't answer her. Instead she threatened the aunt, saying, “I will arrest you if tell anyone what you saw!”

Ms. Wu's breasts became infected and her left hand was disabled. She was later locked up in an iron cage, and then handcuffed on a death bed alongside another female practitioner, Qu Shumei.

Ms. Wu Warned to Keep Quiet

In 2004, the Dalian Forced Labour Camp was shut down. On October 28th, 2004, Ms. Wu was transferred to the Masanjia Forced Labour Camp, where she was further persecuted. On her way there, Ms. Wu kept shouting “Falun Gong is good!”

After being held in the camp for two years and three months, Ms. Wu was transferred to the Public Security Bureau. Agents there punched and kicked Ms. Wu, and then slapped her face and pulled her hair. They handcuffed her so tightly to a tiger bench that her wrists were cut and bleeding. She was finally released on April 29th, 2006.

On April 9th, 2007, two women came to Ms. Wu's house pretending to be from the local Water Department. After they tricked Ms. Wu into opening her door, personnel from the Pulandian 610 Office, Tiexi Police Station, and the community board stormed into Ms. Wu's house, handcuffed her, and then ransacked her home. They carted away Ms. Wu's Falun Gong books, printer, and materials exposing the persecution of Falun Gong, and then forcibly took her to the Luotaishanzhuang Brainwashing Centre, where she was persecuted for three months. On the way to the camp, Ms. Wu kept shouting “Falun Gong is innocent and is being wrongly persecuted! Falun Gong is good!”

Ms. Wu was later taken to the Pulandian Public Security Bureau, where thugs repeatedly yanked on her handcuffs, causing the cuffs to cut deeply into her wrists. Ms. Wu shouted, “It's a crime to persecute Falun Gong! Falun Gong is good! The Heavens will disintegrate the Chinese Communist Party!” While the thugs were slapping Ms. Wu in the face, a 610 Office agent named Zhang grabbed Ms. Wu by the throat and strangled her until she almost passed out. Then he threatened to handcuff her to a tiger bench.

A female officer named Chen Xin punched Ms. Wu in the face, pulled her hair, and then said, “Don't you remember me? I am the rogue you practitioners exposed on the Falun Gong website—Chen Xin.” Chen kicked Ms. Wu and put Teacher [Teacher Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Gong] Li's photo under Ms. Wu's buttocks. That night, Ms. Wu was transferred to the Pulandian Detention Centre.

Ms. Wu Force-fed and Hooked to an IV; Police Threatened to Shoot Her

Ms. Wu was handcuffed and shackled to a bed in the Pulandian Detention Centre. After Ms. Wu went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution, a prison doctor surnamed Yan force-fed her, causing Ms. Wu to vomit blood. In an attempt to avoid responsibility, captain Guan Lijuan (female) threatened to shoot her. She later ordered Ms. Wu to pack up her belongings and leave the prison. However, that same night, the director of the community board Chang Yue ordered an ambulance to go to Ms. Wu's house to put her on an IV. Even though she was closely monitored, Ms. Wu managed to escape.

Ms. Wu Arrested and Then Taken to the Masanjia Forced Labour Camp

On June 20th, 2007, while Ms. Wu was en route to see her family, several 610 Office agents arrested her and took her to the Masanjia Forced Labour Camp. As soon as Ms. Wu entered the camp, guards ordered her to write a guarantee statement renouncing Falun Gong. Ms. Wu refused to sign anything, nor did she cooperate with the guards.

When two guards tried to cut Ms. Wu's hair, she strongly resisted, so the guards tied her arms behind her back. Ms. Wu immediately announced that she was going on a hunger strike to protest the persecution. When practitioners Geng Li and Zhang Min from Dalian City had previously gone on hunger strikes, guards used a special device called a “mouth opener” to force-feed them.

This form of persecution is especially cruel and extremely painful. Victims are first handcuffed on a death bed, then guards forcibly insert this torture device into their mouth. The device is then adjusted to its maximum capacity, stretching the victim's mouth almost to the point of breaking the jaw. The guards then force-feed the victim, sometimes causing the victim to choke to death. Eight guards force-fed Ms. Wu using this device, with one guard, Shi Yu, even sitting on Ms. Wu to restrain her.

Nine months later, Ms. Wu was transferred to the First Brigade and forced to perform slave labour. In March 2008, after she shouted “Falun Gong is good!” guards handcuffed her to a death bed for three days and knocked out one of her teeth. The guards further tortured her by playing a high-pitched sound next to her ears.

Ms. Wu Stripped Naked, Strangled, and Hung Up

On New Year's Eve 2008, when it was freezing cold outside, guards stripped Ms. Wu naked, strangled her, and taped her mouth shut for transcribing Falun Gong teachings. Guards Zhang Zhuohui, Zhang Jun, Zhang Huan, and Huang Haiyan pushed Ms. Wu into a storage room, tied her feet up with a piece of cloth, and then hung her up. They told Ms. Wu to seriously reconsider her beliefs. Ms. Wu said, “There is nothing wrong with having righteous faith and striving to become a good person.” Zhang Jun kicked Ms. Wu in the stomach and threatened to send her to an even colder room.

On April 1st, 2008, guards Liu Hui and Wang Shuzheng ordered an inmate to strip Ms. Wu naked in the washroom. Ms. Wu shouted “Falun Gong is good!” The inmate handcuffed Ms. Wu to a death bed, used a mouth opener to open her mouth, then kept hitting her. As a result, Ms. Wu' mouth bled profusely. The inmate then poured dirty water into Ms. Wu's mouth and forced her eyes open without allowing her to blink for an extended period to torture her.

Ms. Wu's Tooth Was Knocked Out and Her Eye Swelled Up

On March 3rd, 2009, guards Zhang Yu and Wang Shuzheng forcibly dragged Ms. Wu into their office and stripped her naked because she shouted “Falun Gong is good!” They then slapped Ms. Wu's face so hard that one of her teeth was knocked out and her left eye swelled up.

The following people are directly involved in the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in the Masanjia Forced Labour Camp: Guards Wang Yanping, Zhang Huan, Huang Haiyan, Zhang Jun, Zhou Qin (director), Wang Naimin (political commissioner), Yang Jian (president), Rong Xiu'e, Zhang Xiurong, Wang Shuzheng, Zhang Yu, and Ren Huaiping.

On May 4th, 2009, Ms. Wu's term was extended by 25 days, after which she was transferred to the Luotaishanzhuang Brainwashing Centre. When Ms. Wu refused to listen to the guards' orders, Su Jing, a former female captain of the Masanjia Forced Labour Camp, was called in to “help” the guards. When Su saw Ms. Wu, she threatened her, saying, “The more you expose us, the more we will hurt you!” On June 15th, Ms. Wu was released. Those involved in the persecution include Gao and Wang from the Pulandian 610 Office, community board member, Jiang Qing, and officers from the Tiexi Police Station in Pulandian.

Ms. Wu and Her Family Harassed and Monitored

Following Ms. Wu's release, her daughter-in-law and brother have been repeatedly harassed by Pulandian 610 Office agents, the local police, and Wu Anjun from the community security department. Agents from different departments have been closely monitoring Ms. Wu, looking for any excuse to further persecute her.

On April 25th, 2013, Ms. Wu was again arrested and sent to Dalian City to suffer yet another round of persecution.

1. "Tiger Bench": Prisoners are forced to sit on a small iron bench that is approximately 20 cm (6 inches) tall with their knees tied together. With their hands tied behind their backs or sometimes placed on their knees, they are forced to sit straight up and look straight ahead without movement for long periods of time.

2. "Death Bed" torture: A practitioner is tied to a bed with his hands handcuffed above his head to the bed rails, and his legs tied with thin nylon ropes. The rope is then tightly wrapped around the practitioner's body and the bed, from his legs to his chest. The rope is wrapped so tightly that the practitioner has difficulty breathing and eventually loses consciousness.
