Mr. Zhang Jianlai from Zhengzhou City was arrested and secretly sentenced to prison over two years ago for practising Falun Gong. His whereabouts are currently unknown. His mother, Ms. Lan Shiqi, passed away in March 2013 without seeing her son one last time.
Mr. Zhang was employed at the Henan Province Electricity Company Hospital. His mother had many illnesses and started to practise Falun Gong. After a period of time, she became healthy. She was very kind and always ready to help others. Her co-workers at the Zhengzhou City Fire and Electricity Factory all respected her.
After Mr. Zhang was arrested on March 21st, 2011, the police ransacked his home. They confiscated a computer, printer, Falun Gong books and a few ten thousand yuan1 in cash. He was held in the Zhongyuan District Detention Centre.
On March 26th, 2011, Mr. Zhang's mother, who was in her 80s, went to the Zhongyuan District Detention Centre to visit him. A guard whose last name was Zhou said that Mr. Zhang had been transferred to the Zhengzhou City Second Detention Centre in Henan Province the day before. His mother went to the Zhengzhou City Second Detention Centre and was turned away, because she did not know Mr. Zhang's prison ID. She was told to send him clothes and cash and to write a him a letter.
On April 11th, 2011, Mr. Zhang started a hunger strike to protest being held. Zhang, the director of the Zhengzhou City Second Detention Centre, told his family to visit on the morning of April 25th, 2011.
The day of the visit, Mr. Zhang could not walk. Three inmates who were being held in the same ward carried him out to visit his family. One inmate held an IV bottle that was inserted into Mr. Zhang's arm containing unknown drugs. There were no visible injuries on Mr. Zhang. This was the first time he had seen his family since being arrested. His condition was very critical at that time.
According to a report on the Minghui website, in September 2011, he was secretly sentenced to two and a half years in prison while being held at the Zhengzhou City Second Detention Centre. In December 2011, he was transferred to the No. 9 Ward in Zhengzhou City Prison, located in Xinmi City, Henan Province.
His wife divorced him and his family members felt the strain of having a relative in prison.
Mr. Zhang's father was terrified of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). He would often criticize his wife and did not allow her to practise Falun Gong. After Mr. Zhang was arrested and persecuted, his father frequently lost his temper and threw things.
It was a heavy blow for Mr. Zhang's mother and she frequently fell. She developed some serious illnesses. In March 2013 when her husband got angry and threw things, she passed out. She never regained consciousness after being taken to the hospital. Two days later, she passed away. Mr. Zhang was unable to attend his mother's funeral.
Mr. Zhang's father went home after his wife was taken to the hospital. With much regret he said in front of his neighbours, “If she lives, I will no longer control her. She can do whatever she wants.” The death of Mr. Zhang's mother brought great sorrow to his father, who had suffered a lifetime of persecution by the CCP.
Yet another family has been destroyed by the CCP.
