Starting from when Gongding was a baby and well into his teens, his life has been a veritable nightmare. In addition to seeing his mother, Shan Fugui, forcibly abducted from his home for practising Falun Gong, he spent many sleepless nights knowing that she was being routinely tortured in a forced labour camp.

After Ms. Shan's grief-stricken husband passed away last year in Shandong Province, China, her elderly father and mother were unable to take care of Gongding, which made him very sad.

Mother Abducted from Home Then Detained

On March 22nd, about a dozen people suddenly showed up at Gongding's home, including the head of the Yedian Township police station, Ma Kin, and policemen Peng Tao and Zhu Changbo. After ransacking his residence from top to bottom, they confiscated Falun Gong informational materials. Before leaving, they questioned Gongding and threatened to detain his mother for two weeks. Gongding later found out that his mum had been reported for exposing the persecution of Falun Gong.

Gongding’s grandmother and grandfather were devastated by the news of their daughter's arrest. When Ms. Shan's relatives and friends went to the police station to inquire about her situation, they were threatened with arrest.

On the April 5th, the day of Ms. Shan's scheduled release, Gongding, his grandmother, and two relatives went to pick her up from the Mengyin County Detention Centre. When they were told that she had been transferred to the Linyi Detention Centre, they were devastated.

A few days later, Gongding and his grandmother went to the Linyi Detention Centre to see his mother. The police told them, “Shan Fugui is being detained and awaiting criminal prosecution. Only a lawyer can see her!” Gongding and his grandmother were very surprised to hear that and drove home without saying a word. When Gongding arrived home, he quickly locked the front and back doors, not daring to venture outside. Since he had never learned how to cook, he often went hungry.

Gongding missed his mother very much, and often said aloud, “Mum, when are you coming home?”

Bitter Childhood

A kindhearted neighbour often remarked, “Gongding has been traumatised by the regime’s persecution of Falun Gong. He has yet to enjoy his life!”

In 1999, Ms. Shan went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong and was detained. The police sent her back to Tanfu Township where officials extorted more than 6,000 yuan1 from her. Gongding was only a few months old at the time.

The following year, Ms. Shan was taken to a brainwashing centre and had 2,000 yuan extorted from her by city officials. One official, Pan Yushan, ordered thugs Zhao Dong and others to beat her. After throwing her to the ground, they mercilessly beat her with wooden sticks. Ms. Shan’s back and buttocks turned black and blue. The police ordered her to slander Falun Gong if she wanted them to stop.

In September 2006, the chief of the Tanfu Township police station, Li Haitao, and about ten others broke into Gongding’s home and dragged Ms. Shan to a waiting police van. She was later sentenced to two years in the Jinan Women's Forced Labour Camp. Gongding, who was eight years old at the time, considers himself lucky that the police didn’t take his dad, too.

Gongding's Father Passes Away

For many years, Ms. Shan's husband lived in fear of the Chinese regime's persecution of Falun Gong. As a result, he suffered from heart disease, high blood pressure, and kidney failure. Since he could not afford medical treatment due to the large sums of money that had been extorted from him, he passed away last year. The family is still heavily in debt.

After Gongding graduated from junior high school, he was accepted at a technical college. Unable to cope with the ongoing emotional stress in his life, he dropped out of school, then later found a job. However, he was so afraid that the police would arbitrarily detain his mom that he quit his job to spend more time at home with her.

The Mengyin County610 Office is now trying to manipulate the judicial system to illegally sentence Ms. Shan. One can only imagine how much more suffering Gongding and his mother will face in the future!
