Ms. Xu Huidi died on June 23rd, 2014, a month after being arrested on May 20th. She had been detained at the Shenyang No. 1 Detention Centre.
The detention centre claimed that she died of a heart attack. Her family demanded an explanation, as they were not aware of Ms. Xu having any health issues prior to her arrest.
At around 8:00 on the morning of June 23rd, Ms. Xu's family received a call from the police, saying that she was in critical condition and had been taken to the No. 242 Hospital. By the time the family arrived at the hospital, Ms. Xu had died.
A staff member of the detention centre forbade the family from changing Ms. Xu's clothes. It is customary in China for family members to put the best clothes on their deceased loved ones one last time.
Ms. Xu started vomiting and having spasms at around 5:30 a.m. on the day of her death. The inmates reported the situation to the guards, but the guards took no action until after the third report, half an hour later. The ambulance eventually arrived at around 7:00.
Ms. Xu was arrested on the morning of May 20th, for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. Her home was ransacked and her Falun Gong books, DVD player, and Falun Gong leaflets exposing the persecution were confiscated. She was taken to the Shenyang No. 1 Detention Centre on May 21st, after a physical examination.
