Mr. Liu Qingtian's family rushed to a local hospital in the early morning of January 26th, 2015, upon being notified by the prison that he had been hospitalized. They were not allowed to talk to him and had to watch him quietly pass away at 11:30 that night. Even at his death, his feet were still shackled.
The police next cremated the 66-year-old Falun Gong's practitioner's body without his family's consent, and claimed that he had died of a “heart attack.”
Mr. Liu Qingtian was a retired worker from Panshi City Railway Station in Jilin Province. He used to suffer from heart ailments and diabetes, but his symptoms disappeared after he began to practise Falun Gong. He was serving a 12-year sentence at the time of his death for refusing to give up his belief in Falun Gong.
Prior to his arrest in 2008 that led to his imprisonment, he was once kept in solitary confinement for more than 80 consecutive days in 2004. The various abuses he suffered eventually caused him to lose his eyesight, but his family was ordered to pay 25,000 yuan1 in medical expenses.
