As you know, Dr. Li is an American citizen from California who was arrested upon arrival at the Guangzhou airport in southern China. While the Chinese government claims that Mr. Li was arrested on charges of sabotaging television and radio equipment, Dr. Li and his supporters deny these charges and believe he has been detained due to his practise of Falun Gong.
I am familiar with the case, and have been reassured by the U.S. State Department that the Department is monitoring Dr. Li’s treatment closely.
I share your concerns about human rights abuses in China and around the world, including concerns about the current situation involving Falun Gong. I have joined several Senate colleagues in communicating with the President of the People’s Republic of China, Jiang Zemin, and denouncing the persecution of practitioners of Falun Gong. Please be reassured that I will continue to monitor this issue closely.
