Ms. Ni Xiuhua from Juancheng City, Shandong Province used to suffer from severe lung disease, but after she took up the practice of Falun Dafa, she soon recovered. On December 31, 2000, she was arrested for distributing Dafa literature and thrown into prison, where she was tortured. Policeman Chen Baodong forced her to stand in a drafty place and did not allow her to sleep for several days. As a result, her lung disease recurred. She had great difficulty breathing and she had oedema all over her body. Seeing that she was near death, the police released her on January 22, 2001. Her family members immediately sent her to a hospital in Heze City for emergency treatment; however, Chen Baodong pursued her to Heze City and kept intimidating her. Her family members then transferred her to the home of a relative. Chen Baodong then went to her relative's home to harass her, but he was driven out by the neighbours.
As a result of the severe persecution, Ms. Ni passed away in June 2001. The police then spread rumours saying that she died because she refused to take any medicine.
