Deng was arrested illegally by the Harbin City Public Security Bureau on July 31, 2001. On August 3 his family received notice of his death. The police told his father that Deng was handcuffed to a heating pipe for a night, and at 8:15 the next morning he jumped off a 12-storey building and died.
When his relatives were brought to see his remains, they discovered two bruises of 2-3 centimeters in diameter on his chest. There was also a deep dent in the back of his skull. There were no other wounds.
Despite his relatives' strong opposition, several medical examiners dissected Deng's body and hastily concluded that he died of a ruptured liver caused by his suicidal jump.
The police never showed his relatives the field record, although initially they promised to do so.
On August 7 the police hastily cremated Deng's remains and gave his relatives 5,000 Yuan RMB.
The following is a suspicious point regarding the police and medical examiners' reports. The building is very high. The 12th floor should at least be 33 meters tall. Jumping down from such a high building, the body should have been severely injured, with more than a dent in the back of the skull and a ruptured liver.
