On the 5th of June 2003, Radio France Internationale (RFI) reported on Charles Li’s detention and his being forced-fed in China. The report was broadcasted in Mandarin to mainland China and the Chinese area of Paris.

According to the Falun Dafa Information Centre, Falun Gong practitioner and American citizen Li Xiangchun (Charles Li) has been detained in Nanjing Prison, Jiangsu Province in China, since the 22nd of January this year, here he has been force-fed because of being on a hunger strike. After the U.S. Consulate official in Shanghai was denied a visit Dr. Li, he insisted on getting in touch with Charles Li by phone. On the phone, Charles Li said that he had been ill-treated and force-fed. According to the UN human rights annual report, force feeding is often used as a torture technique on detainees who are on hunger strike. The hunger striker severely suffers during the force-feeding procedure or even chokes to death.

The Falun Dafa Information Centre has confirmed 720 cases of Falun Gong practitioners' dying from torture and abuse in Chinese police custody. 74 of those have died from force-feeding while on hunger strike.

According to the same news source, police arrested Ms. Wei Xingyan, a 28-year old Chongqing University graduate, for participating in a World Falun Dafa Day activity this May. She was detained in the Baihelin Detention Centre located in the Shapingba district, Chongqing, where policeman raped her as other prison inmates looked on. When Ms. Wei then began a hunger strike to protest her treatment, police botched an attempt at violently force-feeding her, seriously injuring both her trachea and oesophagus, leaving her unable to speak, and in the danger of losing her life.
