During the press conference, Zhao Ming, a Postgraduate student in the Department of Computer Science of Dublins Trinity College, described how he was illegally detained, imprisoned and brutally tortured for 20 months in Chinese labour camps simply because he returned to China to peacefully appeal for Falun Gong. The guards in the labour camps instigated the inmates to beat up Zhao Ming and force feed him when he went on a hunger strike. Because Ming refused to renounce his belief in Falun Dafa, labour camp policemen used 6 electrical batons to apply electrical shocks simultaneously to the sensitive parts of his body, leading to a loss of feeling in both his legs. After persistent requests and appeals from the Irish people and government, Zhao Ming was finally released in March 2000. He subsequently returned to Ireland to resume his studies.
Another Irish Falun Gong practitioner, Ms. Dai Dongxue, applied for a passport renewal and was turned down by the Chinese Embassy. Dais two elder sisters and her younger brother were unlawfully arrested several times because they practise Falun Gong. Up to today, Dais eldest sister is still imprisoned but her actual whereabouts are unknown. Dais family has been torn apart by this persecution. Even the information about her elderly mothers death last year was blocked by the Chinese regime. Since the Chinese Embassy refused to renew her passport, Ms. Dai missed the last opportunity to see her mother before she died.
