In August 1999, Tan Chengqiang went to Beijing to appeal for Dafa and was detained for 15 days. He went to Beijing again in October of the same year and was sent to the Yimianpo Labour Camp, where he was detained for two years. On May 18, 2003, village head Wang Hongsheng and villager Liu Hongguo reported him when he was clarifying the truth to people. Thugs from the "610 Office" arrested and sent him to the No. 2 Detention Centre. Tan Chengqiang held a hunger strike during detention to protest the evildoer's persecution. Police officers brutally force-fed him. He was sent to a hospital when he was on the verge of death. They diagnosed him as suffering from complications arising from liquids filling up his lungs. At this time, the "610 Office" authorities notified his family to take him home. Even then, village head Wang Hongsheng said to him, "We'll detain you again when you get a little better."
Tan Chengqiang passed away at 10:00 p.m. on July 19, 2003, mere days after he returned home.
