At the recent David Bowie concert in Milan, the host of the Italian RTL broadcasting station, Pamparana, interviewed David Bowie’s drummer, Sterling Campbell.
The host began by saying: Today our topic is the human rights problem in China. One such group being persecuted is called Falun Gong. What I want to emphasise is that Falun Gong is a spiritual movement, not a “X cult” propagandised by the Chinese totalitarian government. This persecution is not solely directed against Chinese Falun Gong practitioners, but also Westerners practitioners.
During the interview, Sterling talked about his practice of Falun Gong. He said that Falun Gong enabled him to give up his wrong behaviour, including excessive drinking and fighting, and taught him how to become a better person. He also talked about his personal experiences of making an appeal for Falun Gong in Tiananmen Square and of being beaten by the Chinese police as well as why he went to China to appeal for Falun Gong. The reason for this was that he hoped to put an end to the bloody persecution. When talking about the reason for the persecution against Falun Gong, he told the audience that China’s former leader, Jiang Zemin, out of his personal interest and jealousy, abused his power to launch a persecution against good people who practise “Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.” He listed a large number of the persecuted cases. Finally, the host invited the audience to take note of the persecution and help to put an end to it.
