Schopfheim. The Beijing police arrested André Huber, a twenty-four-year old Langenauer Falun Gong practitioner, after demonstrating on Tiananmen Square in February, 2002. He and other like-minded people have therefore filed a complaint against the former President Jiang Zemin. Our editor has talked with André Huber.
BZ [Editor]: What is it that you are accusing Jiang Zemin of?
Huber: We have filed a complaint with the Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Karlsruhe, as he is guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity.
BZ: You are still at it after one-and-one-half years, even with the unpleasant experience with the Chinese regime and your personal experience in the Beijing prison?
Huber: Nothing has improved in China; on the contrary, the situation has become worse. At the time I demonstrated on Tiananmen Square, already four hundred Falun Gong practitioners had died in labour camps. Since then the number has doubled. And there are still about 200,000 of us in prison.
BZ: Falun Gong is filing charges in Germany against one of the most powerful men in distant China. Do you actually see any opportunity to prosecute Jiang, or is this a public relations stunt?
Huber: Although we are taking this matter very seriously, we are fully aware that a conviction of Jiang Zemin is rather unlikely. For example, the significant economic interests might create an insurmountable obstacle. We are mainly interested in Jiang Zemin as he is the driving force behind the persecution.
BZ: Falun Gong is not the people, but a religious association. Don’t you think that the genocide accusation is on rather shaky grounds?
Huber: Our attorney from Berlin views this differently. Also, the definition as promulgated by the United Nations covers a number of the Falun Gong persecution issues. Genocide is seen as an act that destroys partially or fully a race or religious group. This is definitely the case for Falun Gong.
