The sun shone brightly in Hannover on the 10th of December, World Human Rights Day. On this special day, many Falun Gong practitioners from different places in Germany gathered in the busy town centre. The activity was held to gain support for the lawsuit against Jiang Zemin and his senior aides, recently filed in the German Supreme Court and to generally raise the public profile of Falun Gong and the persecution in China.
Two banners in German and Chinese reading ‘World Human Rights Day’ were displayed. On a display board, there was an introduction to former Berlin student who is now illegally imprisoned in China Xiong Wei. Another display board showed the stark contrast between the beautiful Falun Gong exercises and the brutal, harsh reality of the persecution in China. Practitioners sent righteous thoughts, performed the Falun Gong exercises, handed out leaflets and collected petition signatures.
On the previous day, a radio reporter had interviewed one of the practitioners in Hannover, raising public awareness of Xiong Wei's case; a Chinese student, who lived in Germany for six years, currently detained in China. On the 10th of December, this interview was broadcast andthe Falun Gong activities in Hanover were also mentioned. As a result many people came to our stall to sign the petition and expressed their best wishes to us.
After the news about Xiong Wei and reports on the lawsuit filed against former Chinese president Jiang Zemin featured widely in the media, many local people became very interested in knowing what was happening to Falun Gong in China. In addition, a campaign-song to rescue Xiong Wei, composed by two people who practise Falun Gong, had also been broadcast and the result was very positive. Many people expressed their support as soon as we started to chat with them.
The Mayor sent a letter, stating, ‘In people’s basic rights, survival and freedom are involved, there shouldn’t be any compromise or ambivalence, because discrimination and torture cannot be allowed, human freedom cannot be deprived at will, and the fundamental human dignity can never be allowed to be compromised. All those who have been affected by this campaign of persecution against Falun Gong should take action against torture, against the killings, against the genocide and the crimes against humanity. They should take legal action against the former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin, who is responsible for this persecution."
Before reading a statement from non-governmental organisation the International Association of Human Rights, a practitioner gave an introduction to Falun Gong to everyone. Later that day, many practitioners voluntarily took the microphone and spoke to the people about the persecution of human rights inside China. The music for rescuing Xiong Wei, practitioners’ truth clarification efforts and news on the lawsuit all linked together harmoniously with the activities and atmosphere of World Human Rights Day. In the past, practitioners have never seen such a great amount of people showing an interest in Falun Gong and wanting to sign their names on petitions for rescuing Xiong Wei and suing Jiang Zemin.
