Dear Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Bill Graham:
We write to call for urgent help to rescue Canadian citizen, Qiu Qingqing's younger sister, Ms. Qiu Yanyan, who is currently detained in Beijing Chaoyang District Detention Center for practicing Falun Gong.
On February 19, officers from Chaoyang District Police Substation, Beijing took Ms. Qiu Yanyan away from her company. They then ransacked her home and confiscated all of her Falun Gong books, video/audio tapes, computer and passport.
Ms. Qiu, 33, graduated from Beijing University in 1992 and has good command of German, English and Urdu. She was an outstanding student when she was in Beijing University and was once class monitor. Before her arrest, she worked in an export-import company in Beijing. Yanyan started practicing Falun Gong in 1998. She disciplines herself with Falun Dafa principles and seeks no fame or self-interest. Many times, she refused to accept improper payments or bonuses, while her professional competence and moral quality won general praise in her company. Before her arrest, Yanyan was prepared to go to the U.S. on business.
The Canadian government has already helped to have at least 12 Canadian family members rescued. Four of them have come to Canada. Qiu Qingqing is seeking help from the Canadian government and the international community to rescue her sister, Yanyan.
Recently, the persecution of Falun Gong in China has been escalated. Practitioners from different areas have been arrested. It has been verified that nearly 900 Falun Gong practitioners have died from the persecution. In the recent few weeks, more than 20 Falun Gong practitioners died as a result of torture.
We call upon the Canadian government to immediately take action to help rescue Ms. Qiu Yanyan and other family members who are persecuted for their belief in Falun Gong.
