Falun Dafa practitioner Mr. Shang Qingling of Chayu Village, near Laiwu City, Shandong Province died on January 31, 2001 after suffering brutal tortures in a detention centre. (Reference: http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2001/2/16/6712.html). For a long time after Mr. Shang died, the details of his death were unclear because of the information blockade in China. Now, we are exposing the facts concerning his death, including the vicious acts of the Laiwu Detention Centre.
At noon on December 28, 2000, Mr. Shang was abducted in the Laigang 6.20 market by policemen led by officer Miao from the Tietonggou Police Station. Mr. Shang was later detained in Cell No. 11 in the detention centre. He refused to sign the "Repentance Statement" [in this statement the practitioner admits remorse for practising Falun Gong, promises to give up Falun Gong and never again associate with other practitioners or go to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong]. Mr. Shang went on a hunger strike to protest. On the ninth day of the hunger strike, he was handcuffed and leg shackled, and he was then brutally force-fed. Seven or eight people pressed him down and fed him with noodle soup, and he was unable to breathe throughout much of the force-feeding. In order to torment him more, the police ordered the common criminal inmates to torture Mr. Shang using all kinds of measures. Those criminals even force-fed Mr. Shang with excrement, causing severe infections and injuries to his lungs and trachea. On January 12, 2001, Mr. Shang, who was very close to death, was released. It is reported that the Laiwu Detention Centre even extorted 3,000 yuan when releasing him, and the village paid this money [500 yuan is the average monthly income for an urban worker in China].
Upon returning home, Mr. Shang could not eat anything. He had chest pains, and he was always short of breath. For more than ten days, he could only sit because he was unable to lie down due to the severe pain. His health condition deteriorated daily. He was sent to the Laigang Plant General Hospital for treatment, and doctors there drew out two bottles of pus from his chest. They tried their best, but they failed to save his life.
On January 31, 2001, Mr. Shang Qingling died in the hospital.
Later, the vicious police reported to their superiors about Mr. Shang's death. Without informing Mr. Shang's family, the Shandong Television Station fabricated a story saying that Mr. Shang died as a result of practising Falun Gong.
Before the events leading to Mr. Shang's death, he had journeyed to Beijing to appeal for Falun Dafa in October 2000. Upon returning home, he was detained in the Chengzipo Detention Centre of Gangcheng District for 15 days. He was often followed and monitored, and during those "politically sensitive" days, there were often vicious people breaking into his home and harassing him. They interrupted his entire way of life. The former ruling party chief, Shang Qingsheng of Chayu Village, was involved in cooperating with the Tietonggou Police Station in persecuting and arresting Shang Qingling every time.
Mr. Shang Qingling was only 38 years old when he died, and he was a very honest and kind vegetable farmer. He had an elderly mother of over 80 years and a teenage child as well as a virtuous wife. People in his village all regarded Mr. Shang as a good man. When he was selling his vegetables in the market, he was always very friendly to his customers, and he never cheated them. Many people liked to buy vegetables from him. Before practising Falun Gong, Mr. Shang had liver disease and could not do any heavy labour. He was cured after practising Falun Gong, and his family of three enjoyed great happiness and joy.
After his death, his wife was filled with sorrow, and had difficulty supporting the family.
